obd 2 port Sign In

I have a 2002 chevy Impala. I have a engine trouble light that came on. I bought my car to a shop to get a diagnostic and they informed me that the pins in the obd 2 port are not in the right places How do i find out where the pins are supposed to be located and does each wire leading to a pin have to be in a specific slot ( example - green wire must be in upper slot 3) ? I have purchased a obd2 reader but do not want to use it and possibly damage it until I get the issue with the port fixed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Plug your code reader in and see if it communicates with the vehicle. It will not hurt anything. If no communication with vehicle, look for blown fuses. Have you owned the car for long? If you are only owner, you would know if there has been any changes to the wiring.
