possible overcharging; the terminal at the -negative post is crusted and corroded after only 1 year. the positive was fairly clean with some normal corrosion after 1yr but not bad. top of the battery had some signs of acid leaking out the top vents. the battery area was ok with what looks like some acid leaking out the vents then over top of the battery. not bad. i would like to tone down the charging maybe 1/2 volt to 1 volt and watch it over the next few months. i suspect the altenator is overcharging just a little too much with the acid coming out the top vents on the top of the battery and the negative post. the vehicle is an 89 Toyota PU with the 22R EFI. how do i tone down the charging?

You don't "tone down" a charging system. There is no way to do that. From what I read, you haven't even tested the charging voltage yet. None of the things you described translate to an overcharging system. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Also I might add that the corrosion around the negative post is probably from overtightening and general mishandling of the battery. Not from overcharging. The seal between the post and the battery case has been damaged.Battery needs to be recharged and tested correctly.

Synchro>>>> was not having starting problems even with the corroded negative terminal at the post. turns over and starts fine. the battery is holding a charge. decided it was time to clean it up and take a closer look as to why it is doing this. its only been about 1 1/2 year since i last replaced the altenator and teminals. the negative was corroded. the positive was ok. something is wrong. cleaned everything up with new terminals. started it up cold. ran a test with a test meter. set the meter on DC 20volts. 14.3-14.4 volts after a cold start. that is normal. the regulator is wide open after a start. let it run at an idle to get up to operating temp on the gauge. ran another test. 14.2-14.3 after 5-10 minutes at operating temp. this is not normal. i could be wrong but i am very sure the regulator should settle in at @13-13.5volts. 14 is too much. looks like the regulator is stuck wide open overcharging. i could be wrong but its something like overheating water. the acid in the battery starts to boil over out the vents. the regulator is internal in the altenator. replace is the only choice. do you agree or disagree?

Those are fine for voltages but a cracked/broken battery case isn't! It's spitting out acid and causing more troubles for you so toss it for one that hasn't been mishandled and a good one and if cable ends are messed up replace them, T

tom. its overcharging. this might be why it spitting acid out the vents and corroding the cable and terminal. 14.5 is ok after a start. after what was used for the start has been replaced the regulator should settle in at about 13-13.5. this has been my experience. looks like the regulator is stuck wide open. if the battery case was broken and leaking the battery area would be a complete mess with corrosion and acid. just the top around the negative terminal is messed up. the battery is getting a little on the old side. i guess its time to replace it.

No - it's not overcharging at 14.5V. Who told you it's supposed to drop to as low as 13V? That's too low. If battery is old anyway toss it as said, T

As you have already been told numerous times, your problem is not your charging system, that is fine. Replace the battery, clean and seal all the terminals.
