2005 UK Vauxhall Vectra 1.8 (Z18XE) 140k Hi Forum, First post here. I've been searching for 'scope traces showing the cam and crank sensor together. Saw some on this site and hoped someone may be able to point me in the right direction for my car? I've had an ongoing cam sensor issue that started when the water-pump failed. All new belt kit then (it seems) the cam sensor is not matching up to the crank sensor. Crank sensor probably OK as engine will run without cam-sensor. Nice 50% square wave from camsensor. Possibly very slight wear in crank sprocket key-way - no better with new gear/key. MIL on, code 0340 no car/spanner lamp. Clear all codes MIL off, car/spanner lamp on. 0340 pending. 300 miles later:MIL on, code 0340 no car/spanner lamp. I have a scope but have no idea how the two signals should relate. Looking at cam sprocket, the sensor switches at (crank angle) 30 degrees after TDC(fired1). The sensor then remains switched for 1 crank revolution, switching back at 30 degrees after TDC(fired3) This sort of on/off cam sensor (on for half a cam rev, off for half a cam rev) seems very simple and I hoped it was just to indicate which cylinder should be firing, but there's lots online about the ECU being really fussy if the timing is very slightly off (but no diagrams or info on degrees between the sensors output). I doubt you'll find too much help here. This site is US based and that vehicle is not sold here. Heres a cam and crank waveform of a zx18xe or maybe zx18xe1. Don't know what the year is, but below that is a 2008 zx18xe .jpeg. They look the same (besides the crank sync phase), but don't know if this will help you. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

DiscreetSignals!!!!!!!!!! Thank you 1000 times! Now I can compare my signals and see if they are appearing at the right time with relation to each other. Really could not find this in the UK. If you ask an English auto electrician here if he has a digital 'scope, he will point at an amplified stethoscope! I suspect some of them can drive a scope but wont admit to it and keep them for thier private use. They may be frightened that if they admit to having one, that they might be expected to explain what it does. Thanks again (and again), Kbs

Hi Hammer, Thanks for the response. The reason for posting here is that this is a US site and tech info is therefore more available. The UK has losts it balls when it comes to repairing things, we simply give them to the garage who replaces part after unnecessary part until the customer runs out of money or the garage finds a fix by luck. Not a viable option for a low value car like mine when garages rip us off at >$120 an hour. The Zx18xe engine isn't just limited to loads of Opel cars but also appears in Audi (if you're unlucky). Fortunatly the Zx18xe1 and Zx18Xer are also suitable for my question, I should have indicated that initially, sorry. Thanks anyway, Kbs

Hammer's point was that in the US we have never seen this car, and we don't have access to any tech data here. A lot of makes we have here sell models to you that we can't get. Others sell the same model here and there but the engines sold over there aren't the same ones we get. Because we don't work on the euro version of it, we don't know the differences between them. Major information providers like Alldata and Mitchell on Demand only show us information about what is sold in the US. I think DS found that one through autonerdz.com, and if you are one that is savvy with your scope that would definately be a site to bookmark. IATN is pretty good too, but I don't know if they have models like yours in the waveform library. There is definately a lot in their archives. Sorry to hear you aren't finding much luck with the techs over there. If you've got a scope and get good with it maybe you can be the guy who takes on the driveability work in your area. We have that in the states, there are experts with these things that a shop calls in to do a diagnosis and the shop does the R&R work.
