simple security; kia boys got my car Sign In

My son had his 2014 Kia Optima stolen last week. Apparently it's all the rage. His fix is a 'club' on the steering wheel. It should work but I want to install a kill switch on his car (and on my Toyota too).

It's an easy thing to put a switch in line with fuel pump. Any warnings/suggestions you might have? A 20A should do it.

Thanks

(I don't want to purchase a security system $$$)

IDK how hard you want to work at this? I'd suggest disable the trigger wire to starter motor (fuse it just anyway) higher gauged wire to a hardware store on/off switch - hide where inside car.

That way some idiot doesn't keep trying with no fuel pump and kill starter motor till battery is totally run down. Think it out if so running wire thru dash where it's harmless + well protected from chafing,

Tom

Your car already has a very "high tech" immobilizer system so someone either got their hands on a programmed key or they had some pretty sophisticated equipment to beat your system.

IMMOBILIZER SYSTEM

Description

The immobilizer system will disable the vehicle unless the proper ignition key is used. In addition to the currently available anti-theft systems such as car alarms, the immobilizer system aims to drastically reduce the rate of auto theft.
1. Encrypted SMARTRA type immobilizer
A. The SMARTRA system consists of a passive challenge - response (mutual authentication)transponder located in the ignition key, an antenna coil, a encoded SMARTRA unit, an indicator light and the PCM(ECM).
B. The SMARTRA communicates to the PCM(ECM) (Engine Control Module) via a dedicated communications line. Since the vehicle engine management system is able to control engine mobilization, it is the most suitable unit to control the SMARTRA.
C. When the key is inserted in the ignition and turned to the ON position, the antenna coil sends power to the transponder in the ignition key. The transponder then sends a coded signal back through the SMARTRA unit to the PCM(ECM).
D. If the proper key has been used, the PCM(ECM) will energize the fuel supply system. The immobilizer indicator light in the cluster will simultaneously come on for more than five seconds, indicating that the SMARTRA unit has recognized the code sent by the transponder.
E. If the wrong key has been used and the code was not received or recognized by the PCM(ECM) the indicator light will continue blinking for about five seconds until the ignition switch is turned OFF.
F. If it is necessary to rewrite the PCM(ECM) to learn a new key, the dealer needs the customer's vehicle, all its keys and the GDS equipped with an immobilizer program card. Any key that is not learned during rewriting will no longer start the engine.
G. The immobilizer system can store up to eight key codes.
H. If the customer has lost his key, and cannot start the engine, contact Kia motor service station.

I just did and I watched a bunch of videos. It appears that this is only happening to cars without an immobilizer.

The only thing different about the Kia's is that it is easier to pop out the ignition lock. Ford has had locks like that for years. If the car has an immobilizer that won't help them. The ECU will cut out the fuel injectors if it doesn't get the key password.

I don't understand why your car got stolen unless the immobilizer was optional on that model.

Well.... seems like a popular sport this KIA stealing. Why the KIA? I saw the videos too and I'm not sure why this happened. Nothing was disabled on the car.

Trying to find a body shop to fix the damage is difficult. Glass is hard to find and the parts commonly broken, by this common theft, have emptied the well. And their business, on all car damage, is good. They're all backed up until Dec/Jan.

Aside... When I started my 'Can you repair a KIA ....' every shop guy smiled. They knew exactly what had happed. The glass company even told me which window (hadn't seen the car yet) would need new glass.

The plan is to install a kill switch (on something... pump, ignition ...), attach a security sticker on the window with a message something like "Addition security system has been installed", and to get a fake security light. Mike will also be using that club since the kids probably can't read and would try it again.

ps Saw starter motor suggestion but that's too heavy duty for me. Thanks for the suggestion thou.

They like that car because Kia made it so easy to pop out the ignition lock and make the switch so accessible.

I know Ford locks come out the same way but you have to have a key to remove those.

Edit. I have come to the conclusion that the purpose of this idea of a physical security device is simply to stop those considering the first step... breaking the window. That's what I really want. LOL I was thinking a manikin, like the ones used in two person lanes, might do the trick!

I'm buying a physical, visible security device. I've read the reviews on a popular steering wheel locking bar, 'the club'. Not what I expected.

Knowing the professionals, with a little time, will always get thru, 10 seconds, the time which they need to break the club, seems a little short.

Anyone have suggestions as to which device to use. I read one review that said brake peddle locks are best and hardest to defeat. But can you see them? The whole idea is to get the kids to think twice before stealing my Kia again.

(The car has since been electronically hardened but the brand has reputation of easy pickings... therefore the need for visibility. The electronic fix isn't perfect. I want a good physical lock. If they see the 'club' I don't want them smiling as they swing their hammer to break my window. )

Go get a club if it makes you happy.
I don't hear it much anymore but closer to Boston or in the city take a ticket VIOLATION put under wiper and just tow it if for parts to never see it again.

They win I'm sure. Sticker on window in 3 languages if thieves read may helpPirate
