starting issues..please help Sign In

2000 bmw 528i 191,000 miles not starting. replaced the battery. starter is 2 months old. I do not know if power is going to the starter, but nothing at all happens when turning the key to start..no instrument lights dim..nothing at all. I suspected the ignition switch possibly so I turned the key to all three positions a few times.. and once heard a click from the starter..then nothing. Possibly also could be the ews? I am not sure and do not want to start replacing parts again without proper diagnosis.. Here is the history.. the car would not start after sitting for a given time.. first a few days..then it would die overnight. I was always able to charge the battery and the car would start. A few days ago the car would not start and jumped it off.. If the car sat for 15 minutes..it would not start..So to determine if it was a drain or the battery, I disconnected the battery every time I got out of the car. The car started after I reconnected the battery every time. I went in to the grocery store, forgot to disconnect the battery, and tried to start and it failed. Tried to jump start.. and it would not.. Replaced battery..and nothing... all instrument lights on.. no sound at all from the starter.. or dimming of lights when trying to start. EWS? Alarm system? starter relay? Starter? ECU damage from jump starting or disconnecting and reconnecting the battery so many times?.. Another note is that since I've owned the vehicle..very often I could turn the key to start and nothing.. then return key back to off ..and try again..and it would start on the next attempt..every time.

mazinga: Seems you just acquired this car and getting it going. The first thing YOU have to know exactly is what you do if battery for any reason goes dead or disconnected and how to reset stuff. BMW in general is very battery sensitive IMO and witnessed not my specialty for type of vehicle just aware.
BTW - should be lead/acid battery. Parasitc drian overnight requiring recharge if run so low nothing works will kill new lead/acid batteries especially if charged back up faster than a about a 2amp automatic charger but any hard on them.

YOU should have a host of info on resetting things on these cars in car or handy. IDK all of the item affected up to locking up brakes, disable radio and more. Some of these critters if you don't buy the battery at BMW they will request you do any might be a problem alone if not?
