turn signal/ backup fuse blowing Sign In

1991 Chev half ton p/u 5.0 engine manual trans, 220,000 miles.
The problem I am having is the turn/backup fuse blows when I turn the key on. I had trouble not to long ago where I lost my rear turn signals and brake lights- that problem was a pinched harness between the gas tank bracket and frame- I fixed all that and everything worked fine. So far I have checked the turn signal switch and some wires. I have a plow on this truck and i disconnected the plow lights thinking the problem was there but it wasn't. Right now I have the turn signal switch and the plug on rear of truck disconnected.

You found the harness pinched once back there so get back there - you aren't done yet. Suspect bulb sockets, any trailer wiring that might be there. If disconnecting the rear stuff stops the fuse from blowing you should be about sure the problem is after that plug and anything/anywhere the wires go,

The rest of that harness is good. With that plug disconnected fuse still blows, as well as having the turn signal switch un plugged it still blows. I even took the turn signal flasher out and it still blows. Could it be on the reverse lights somewhere?
I'm lost!!

May need to stock up on fuses to pin down just where the short is. With flasher out I'll guess that the short is in the back up light's hot wire. If a fuse blows without it being in reverse then the problem should be between the switch and the fuse.

Not sure I'm helping much for you. Things like this are the reason hair replacement clinics are so popular!

Isn't that the truth!

It blows without it in reverse. I'm going out to check the wire between the fuse and switch now so I'll keep you posted.

Re: turn signal/ backup fuse blowing Sign In

Well!!!!!!

Went looking for backup light switch- thought I found it- unplugged it checked blinkers they worked out of couriousity checked backup lights they were on!!

Plugged whatever it was I uplugged back in turned key fuse held.
Everything works fine right now.

My guess is it is in harness going to backup light switch and me moving it around helped it!!
The harness looks fine its not pinched or rubbing anywhere.

Thanks for now!

Cool Hey guys, sorry about the delay in action. Finally got to work on it yesterday. Found a wire rubbed thru on the harness for the backup lights. It was rubbing on seam of the cab.

Thanks for all the help and I really appreciate what you guys are doing here!!
Keep up the great work.
