turn signals don't work! Sign In

Hi, I have a 1996 Nissan pickup, 2 wheel drive, 4cyl, King Cab . A few weeks back the turn signal clicker started "clicking" very rapidly. The turn signals themselves still turn on and off correctly, but I could hear the "clicker" switch under the dash get very loud and click on & off very fast. I assumed my turn signal "clicker" flasher was going. And sure enough in a few days it went. Only problem is I had now no directionals at all. I went and bought a new flasher for it. Plugged it in , but still no directionals at all. I then looked at fuses, I noticed a 10 amp fuse related to the signals had blow. I put in a new one , but it blew the minute I turned on the ignition swich on!. Whats wrong. Do I now have a short somewhere?
As I said I had directionals all working fine, I just thought the flasher was going when it "clicked" very fast and then finally died out. But usually on other cars in past as I recall, you could still manually click the switch on & off to flash you signals. Now nothing works, no directionals light at all. I tried replacing the 10 amp fues a few times, and each time the fuse blows the minute I turn the ignition on!....What could have happened. Can anyone give me any advise as to what the problem maybe ...Thanks...Mike

?? Just for a test - try taking the flasher out and see if fuse doesn't blow. It will help pin down where it's shorted,

Hi Tom, Took the flasher out, the fuse doesn't blow...I put new one in, fuse blows right away as ignition is turned on....Even put old Nissan's original flasher back in, it too blows the fuse right away as ignition is turned on. So it must be something with flasher connected that shorts and blows fuse ? The new flasher is a CEC brand EF 34 , the old one was a Nissan part 25731 1M200 made by Tridon. The guy at a local CAR Quest Parts store here in Buffalo, NY area stated it would work the same and his books stated this was the replacement part for it....Wonder if I need try another one? or is it something else. I may not be helping you that much but here's some more ideas on this:

If fuse doesn't blow with flasher out it suggests the hot wire right there where it mounts may be the trouble.

If it can still blow with ign on it also could be in the multifunction switch in the wheel or wiring from there to flasher.

Just for posterity - do hazzard flashers work with or without the flasher you are replacing? Many vehicles use one for hazzards and another for directionals and you may be messing with the wrong one. Just a thought that might lead to the problem,

Tom, Forgot to mention that 4-way flashers also do not work...There is also a 10 amp fuse for the hazzards and it too blows when igintion is switched on. I didn't see another 4 way up under dash..not sure if there is another one...again, everything was working fine till the flasher made very fast clicking noises and then , totally failed..when it did, ( even before I went and bought new one) all signals totally failed. As I said , don't the directionals usually still work ( lite up without blinking) when a flasher goes. That's what I seem to recall on my past cars when this happened. But now I have no signal lites at all. All head lamps, horn, brake lites all work, so this really is puzzeling me....Mike

Yes - flashers may work manually when a flasher goes bad or could short inside. They are a source of intermittent issues too. Some use ONE flasher to do both hazzards and directionals some don't. I just don't know on this car.

If in fact one does both then there could be a problem with the plug the flasher mounts into. Hard to believe two flashers both short out though as that's not the most common failure - not blinking is.

They (generically) are bi-metal strips with points that when heated by amp draw open, cool then close. When the amp load is higher they frequently will blink faster as they heat up faster. When trailers are used some will blink like nuts so you use a different one to take it with the extra load and not blink so fast. When a bulb blows some will blink VERY slow or not at all.

Bet you are going thru fuses like water and you can rig up breaker or a trick using a headlight (sealed beam) for testing and not blow all the fuses just testing.

Now - power is up in steering column and enabled with ign on. If the problem is in there you'll need to get in there to see. Sometimes springs and crap break in there touching the wrong things and short out??
