Check engine light came on during a long drive in my Dakota (about 2 hour all highway). Guy at Pepboy's said it was my power steering switch and the system was running lean bank 1, this was a few weeks ago. Today I switched out the power steering switch but not sure how to address the system running lean. Truck ran super rich today (it smelled very gassy) and I believe I had some white smoke coming out the exhaust when pulling off from a stop light. Not exactly sure what to do about this but I've already ordered a new 02 sensor.

Engine size? Did the white smoke smell sweet or did it smell like raw fuel?

4.7 with about 130k. The smell was terrible, nothing sweet about it. I just filled up the tank and the check engine light went off. Feels like it's back to normal during idle and driving but I'm sure it'll come back again once I drive a while.

I do hear a faint clicking noise coming from the front driver's side while idling, also. Not sure what that could be.

did the PS switch correct the p0551 ?

can you confirm the other is P1071? not P0171?

first thought is use a scanner - check fuel trims - LT & ST.

Vehicle is STOCK no modifications ?
Maybe do a fuel pressure test and a leak down... then check for vacuum leaks.
