Hyundai Accent 02
100,785 Miles

First of let me start by saying that I know very little about cars. So sorry I am like talking to a child. Here is my problem. I've had my 02 Hyundai accent for about 5 years now and after the first year I've had to replace the o2 sensor at least 6 going on 7 times. Most the time the o2 sensor fails after 3-6 months. I was wonder what could cause an o2 sensor to fail so often. Is it something that I could be causing? I took it to a Hyundai dealer at one point and they told me it was the cat converter that was causing the issue but when I had it tested at another shop they told me it tested fine. Not sure what to do with this car. I am tempted to take a base ball bat that the damn thing right now. HELP ME PLEASE

laura; That is amazing! Can you get the trouble code that they are retrieving? No, it's not something you can cause
unless you are neglecting maintenance. If the engine is not running efficiently, it can damage the catalytic converter.
The downstream oxygen sensor, if that's the one you are referring, monitors catalyst efficiency only. I cannot affect the way the engine runs. Replacing that sensor won't correct the problem if the catalyst is dead. Try and get the code and post it for us.

Hey Loren,
yeah I don't neglect anything with that car normally when I see a check light I take it in. Also change the oil on schedule. I can't find any of the paper work from the last time I took it in. I took it in about a week ago and the light came back on. I do know that I've replaced both the upstream and the down stream o2 sensor. If I took the car to Auto Zone and had them run a scan on the car would that if the catalyst is dead? I really don't trust the people who told me it wasn't working. My last time going there was pretty bad. I am considering talking to the manufacture about this problem. Thanks for your help!

Well the bottom line is you need to find a place you can trust. No offence to the parts people but you need to realize that is their jobs... Parts. They aren't trained in diagnostics. A simple code pull is one things. They don't have the training or equipment to properly diag a cat.

You need to find a shop that is properly tooled & trained to handle your problem. More than likely they won't be the cheapest shop you find (proper tools & training are expensive).

I haven't seen any codes so it's really had to give any kind of opinion. One thing I will throw out is on some Asians I have had problems with aftermarket O2s, pretty much like the problem you are describing. Once I started going with OE the problem went away. If you are going thru OEs, then obviously there is another problem.....
