04 Chevy Cavalier
2.2L
98,000 miles

My friend and I replaced the fuel pump in the car on Sunday (after having it towed Saturday because it died on the highway). The repair seemed to go without a problem until the check engine light came on Wednesday afternoon, the car had been driven 250 miles or so. I took the car to an auto parts store to have the code scanned and the guy told me it was the code for the gas cap, it either wasn't on or sealed, and wouldn't give me the actual code number. I tried putting the gas cap back on, taking the battery terminal off overnight to reset the code. When I connected the terminal the next morning no code but the check engine light came back on much sooner, 75ish miles. There is a faint whining noise that now exists if you put your head near the rear seat after the car has been running for 10-15 minutes, the whining is not there when the car starts initially. We did replace the O-ring when installing the new pump assembly and it appeared to fit and go on without a problem. I plan to replace the gas cap because its only $4 and would be a really quick fix but it just seems odd that the code showed up several days after the repair. I don't have a way to measure the fuel pressure. Any advice is appreciated!

You have an EVAP leaK somewhere and i suspect you either pinched, damaged or left disconnected one of the vapor hoses at the tank.

Thank you, I'll check at the EVAP box this weekend. What do you make of the "whining" noise? Is it because of the leak or is it a problem with the new pump?

Those hoses are connected to the tank too. The tank will probably have to come back down.

The evap code is probably something weak disturbed in doing the pump. Noise could be the new pump - hope not but stuff happens,
