2006 Mazda 5 2.4l 59k

Car was running rough at idle last night, soon after, CIL came on (hasn't run rough since). OBD II scanner gave (2) P0126 codes (Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Stable Operation). I didn't suspect thermostat, since car seems to be reaching and maintaining normal operation temperatures. Tried to test the "Coolant Temp Sensor" with an ohm meter, by removing the wire harness and attaching my leads to both terminals on the CTS, but I got no reading whatsoever. Is this an indicator that the CTS is bad, or did I not test properly?

Thanks,

Wes

I would say if there is an "open" between the two terminals then probably so. Does the scanner you used to get the code have a live data stream? If so check the sensor reading. they usually will fail to a -40 degrees when the do go put. That can make for all kinds of fun.

If the car is running fine now I would suspect you didn't get your probes on the terminals. An open ECT would default to the max lowest reading as Jeff said. Some of those have female ends and are very tight to get to, you really need to probe them with a paper clip and touch the probes to the paper clips...

I would suspect you possible do have a bad or weak T stat with that code. A bad ECT sensor or circuit would be giving you different code numbers. This is a operating system code and it is possible to have skewed ECT sensor causing this but if that was the case you would get some kind of ohm reading...

Thanks for the help & advice. I think I had my ohm meter on the wrong setting Blush. Change it to 20k and I was getting readings of 15.58 with the car completely cool, outside temp was 72F. Started car and ran for about 5 minutes; reading gradually dropped to about 4.4. So it sounds like it's working, I guess.

I'm gonna proceed with changing the Tstat unless anyone has other suggestions.

Thanks.
