1988 Chevy Blazer S-10 4x4 CODES?

  post locked   1988 Chevy Blazer S-10 4x4 CODES?  

How do I retrieve the codes on Chevy OBD1, without a code reader? ENGINE light is on now. Can I jump pins with a paperclip? Manual Trans, 2.8L, runs FINE, Timing is set perfect, new cap, rotor, plugs & wires. When in 3rd gear going up hill/LOAD, it cuts out. Checked fuel pressure at block = over 10 psi. Spec. = 9-13 psi. Fuel Filter is clean. When I tap on the pressure regulator on the TBI, it cuts out. Checked fuel for water with Kolor Kut and it's good.
HELP.......

  • Turn ignition switch to OFF position
  • Locate Data Link Connector (DLC), see image below.
  • Jumper the A&B terminals(a paper clip or a jumper wire work ok)
  • Turn Ignition switch to ON position.
  • Count the flashes on the "CHECK ENGINE" or "SERVICE ENGINE" light.
  • FLASH, pause, FLASH, FLASH = code 12
  • NOTE: Some 94 & 95 models do not have the B terminal. In which case a scanner is required.
  • NOTE: Some 94 & 95 models that DO have the A & B terminals still require a scanner.
  • All vehicles after 96 are OBDII,and require a scanner to access them.

How do I test the MAP sensor?

It says to measure the voltage with a scan tool with the connector detached and jump a wire between B & C. Can't do that without a scan tool or can I use a Voltmeter in series?

You have to use the scan tool so you know what the computer is seeing. That test is testing the rest of the circuit without the sensor.

Alldata isn't telling me. It's missing a few files. How do I test the MAP sensor by itself?

You just simply follow the flow chart for code 34. That covers all the bases.

You can backprobe the MAP signal wire (light green), hook up a volt meter set on the 20v scale to the probe. Turn the key on engine off. use a vacuum pump and apply vacuum look for a smooth voltage change. This is using a 5v ref. There is also a scale you can look at in Alldata. Check the vacuum line those are good for cracking

Or just do what I do, put on a good tester & go for a spin Wink OR just disconnect it & go for a short ride to see if it makes a difference.........

A good tester is 57 bucks. Do I just stab the green wire? Vacuum lines have all been replaced and are tight. Sorry, I'm not trying to be an idiot, I just want to do this correctly. I need the truck for work.

It's best not to put a hole in the wire if you don't have to....if you do then seal it when you're done.....

They sell back probes, basically just real nice pins with a shield. You can use a paper clip and just slide it into the back side of the connecter under the weather packing(little blue rubber grommet) until you "feel" it touch the connecter. spraying a little throttle body or carb cleaner helps it slide a little easier.......Then do your tests..

Did you try disconnecting the MAP & driving it to see if there was any change????

Tested MAP (K.O.E.O) and it read at the light green wire 3.74 volts to start and lowered gradually as vacuum was applied. Disconnected MAP and test drove = no change. Replaced MAP and check engine light went out as expected. STILL THE SAME SYMPTOM, cuts out in 3rd & 4th with a load. No Check Engine light on. Fuel pressure is over 10 psi. Gauge only goes to 10psi and it's pegged. Plenty of volume.
HELP...

Well since the MAP didn't reallyi fail any of tests you ran I probably wouldn't of changed it, at least until you solved the 1st problem. You took care of the light so I guess that's one positive...

I reread your thread and am assuming you had this problem before you did all that t/u work?

It's a little tough not being able to feel the miss, to see if it feels like the ign breaking down or it's in some other area.

Since it's under heavy load & it wasn't clear if you changed the fuel filter or not, I would want to make sure it's not restricted. If you have the means to check backpressure, that would definitely be a good idea.

You might also want to go back & test the pump for volume as well....It is possible to have good pressure but poor volume.....

I have pressure. Timing is set at 8 degrees adv. and I replaced the plugs, wires, cap & rotor. It was like this before I changed all that. I have fuel pressure above 10 psi.. What about the pressure regulator in the Throttle Body? When I tap on it, it cuts out. That wouldn't set a code? What would the back pressure be?

Well like I mentioned earlier, it is possible to have the correct fuel pressure but not enough volume (fuel) this by no means is a common problem but it is possible due a worn pump running too slow or crack in the line. I know these systems can be a PITA to check pressure on, just out of curiousity, what did you rig up to check pressure on yours?


Backpressure was referring to checking for a restricted exhaust system, any more than a few lbs could indicate a problem. If you don't the equipment to check it, it really wouldn't make sense spending the $$$ to get it, not if you aren't doing this work a lot.

I'm not real sure what's going on when you are tapping on the regulator. Maybe you're distrubing another part in the area? You should probably go thru and gently wiggle on all of the connecters in that area & see what happens. It's possible you may have a loose connection somewhere.....

You mention the problem only happens in 3rd gear going up a hill......I'm assuming it will do it in 4th & 5th as well???

I thought the same thing when I read the tapping part cuz it really doesn't make sense why tapping on a regulator, especially on a TBI system, would make it cut out. It sure wouldn't hurt to sweep it and a glitching TPS usually won't code if it stays in range. But the only problem with that is it seems like that would be all the time not just under heavy load....

That's where being able to driving would really help, to see if it's starving for fuel or if it feels like the ign is breaking down under load...

A look at some fuel trims would be real helpful

It's the pedal position that matters and a glitch will be more noticeable in a higher gear.

Now tapping on the regulator does nothing. So carb/TBI issue is out. Like I said It runs fine till I get to 3rd on a hill. Then it cuts out over and over in a perfectly spaced out time period. Kinda like an ignition problem. I re-checked the timing with the tan wire disconnected as per spec. and it's at 8 degree's Advanced. Re-connected the wire and same deal.... BAH BAH BAH BAH
It's a Manual Transmission
Downshift it into 2nd and WOO HOO.,........ GET ON DOWN...!!!!!! Shift into 3rd and it goes for a minute and then at around 3000-3500 it chokes and keeps doing it at the same rate. BAH count 1,2 BAH 1,2 BAH 1,2 BAH
It's killin', ya' I know... ME 3
No check engine light.
Just saw we have smiley's here too. Crazy
