1996 Nissan Maxima - Won't Rev P0100 Sign In

The car refuses to rev past 2,500 rpms. It idles fairly well... maybe a little rough, but as soon as you start revving it the rpm gauge just starts bouncing right around 2,500 rpm. Definitely seems like air/fuel mix problem, and that code points to a faulty MAF.

So I clean the MAF out. Clean out the TB. No luck. I eventually bite the bullet and replace the MAF. Not cheap boys&girls, and that STILL didn't fix the issue!

What could it be at this point? The car isn't very drivable, and I don't really want to drive it much, it seems like it could be very bad for it.

Please, any assistance is much appreciated! Thank you!!

I guess it's a little too late for this time but for the future.....

Any code you get from your PCM isn't telling you what part is bad, it's telling you what system is being affected.

It's not a bad idea to read up a little on the part in question to see how it works. If by chance it has it's own power source then you would definitely what to check for power and ground at a minium.

In your case, it does have a 12v source off the ECCS relay, so you should start with checking term #1 to see if you have 12v.

Yea, I pulled the plug out of the new MAF and placed the probes directly on the exposed metal on that side, and I still get no voltage. I was told the car should not be running, but the key turned to ON and I'll get 12v on the red wire. I'm still not getting any voltage on any of the wires... I assume it's DC...? I tried switching to AC just to see, no go. Kept rechecking the voltmeter on the battery to be sure the voltmeter is ok - it is.

So is there a fuse or relay to look at? I've pulled a few that I thought may be related, they all look fine. I can't find any fuse that looks like it's directly related to the MAF or intake system at all...

That gets it's power from the ECCS relay..... Now we're gonna check the relay connecter for power & ground 1st before buyin a relay,,,,,right???? lol Wink

Yes, you are correct, that should be 12v DC and it should have power KOEO (key on engine off)

Also I will mention, since the pcm is grounding the relay, it would be best to test all this with a good digital voltmeter....definitely NO test lights

Definitely testing with a voltmeter... not a great digital one... just a cheap analog one. But it has ohms, dc, ac, etc...

At any rate, I do get voltage at the ECCS relay. What's the next step? Continuity from the ECM to the harness I assume?

Actually you don't want to use a analog voltmeter (one with a needle) that is the same as a test light. There isn't enough built in resistance in those.
Most digital voltmeters are high impedance, I believe around 10 megaohms, this is too limit the current flow on a circuit you are checking. Analogs & tests lights don't have enough built in resistance and can actually damage a PCM.

Old school rule of thumb was if it's digital, it's safe to check computer circuits. This is not true anymore (Thank you China). I personally know of a buddy who spiked his Ford PCM with a cheap POS digital from Harbour Freight (even after I offered to loan him my Fluke).

IF it comes between checking it with an analog voltmeter or throwing a ECCS relay at it..............I'd throw the relay at it... Even if the relay doesn't fix it, it will probably be cheaper..........

Damn so even if I do find my "nice" voltmeter it still won't work?!? Ugh. Well I swapped the relay with the FAN1 relay, the problem persists...

Re: 1996 Nissan Maxima - Won't Rev P0100 Sign In

You can check the 12v feeds TO the relay, that just battery voltage. Just look at the wiring diagrams, if the circuit goes to or from the PCM then use caution. The ground for the control side of the relay is just that, a ground from the PCM, while not as critical as say checking a ref voltage circuit it's still a PCM circuit so I always error on the side of caution.

But if it's just battery voltage, relays, motors & solenoids.....Have at it with the good old analog.............

Good to know. I can't seem to find my other voltmeter anywhere... Any recommendations on a new one? Wink
