1998 Isuzu Rodeo 4 CYL 2.2L with 159,000 miles. New fuel pump. Fuel gauge does not work - BUT the real problem is that when I fill the tank the check engine light comes on 0300 random multiple missfire, but once I drive the SUV about 20 or so miles and reset the CEL, it does not come back on until I fill-up again. Any suggestions other than replace the pump? I thought I posted this once before, but I'm about a week from quad heart bypass (*), and my mind is wandering on other things. *I thought those cigarettes I smoked in my younger life were cheap. I was wrong. But four out of five doctors recommended Chesterfield for a "treat instead of a treatment".

might want to start with a SCAN even if rthe CEL is off, are you resetting the CEL or is it going out by itself.. refueling and P0300 issue as you describe knee jerk reaction was EVAP system... purge during non commanded something like p0441 You do NOT refuel with the engine on ?

Let me try this again. I stop at the gas station. TURN OFF THE ENGINE. I refill the tank. Immediately upon driving off, the CEL comes on. It's 0300, Random Multiple Misfire. After I drive 20 miles or so, I turn the CEL off with a scan tool. The light does not come back on, nor is there a code set. YES, I check with my scan tool periodically. No CEL until I refuel. This occurs ONLY when I FILL the tank. I have added gas calculated about a gallon or so less than a full tank. The CEL does not come on nor is there a code set. Does anyone have any ideas?

same answer - EVAP system, Stop refueling at first pump kick off. Check the canister for evidence of fuel. With your scanner check the freeze frame- when CEL is on engine running use the scanner to CK eng vac and FT's Will yur scanner read manufacturers specific codes or just generic? You are aware that erasing codes erases much more than just code number?

Does the engine run bad or feel like it is misfiring before the CEL comes on after you start the engine after refueling? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
