Hey all. Got a question that I have no information on and the dealer has not returned my call. We have the Dodge 1500 pickup with the 5.2L engine. It has tripped DTC's p0442 and P0445. We swapped valves and solenoids with known good ones. Everything seems to work properly now, but the purge solenoid slowly will increase to 100% duty cycle and stay there. Ford will run the purge for a couple of minutes and then shut it off. My question is, is this normal for a Dodge. or is the ECU causing the solenoid to stay energized? All wiring has been checked and there are no shorts, opens, chafes or damage anywhere. Just curious. Guess I need to know to satisfy me. Thanks. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Sorry Tom I’m not sure on the duty cycle part either but if the P0442 (Small leak detected) is an actual small leak the ECU maybe keeping the purge solenoid on until it times out trying to draw the vacuum down to an acceptable reading. When it can’t the ECU maybe sets the P0445 thinking after this long the system should be under vacuum and the solenoid has shorted not allowing purge? Have you tried closing the vent solenoid and then introducing smoke from the EVAP/smoke machine tester; through the test port? That’s just to confirm that there isn’t a 40 thousands or smaller size leak in the system. I’ve only had my EVAP smoke machine for a short time now and I don’t know what I would do without it now. Hook the thing up close the vent solenoid, stand back and watch for the smoke. It’s amazing how small of an EVAP leak will set a code; something you would never see without the smoke machine. Like I said I’m not sure either but I would go after the P0442 first possibly after that has been repaired the P0445 may just disappear all on its own? Dan Canadian "EH"

Thanks Dan. I have been trying to purchase a smoke machine for 3 years. Keep getting told there is no money in the budget for one. So I guess I will buy a box of cigars and go at it. Might have enough techs to keep enough pressure on system to look for leak. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

That’s to bad that the powers to be won’t authorize the purchase and they have come down a lot in price. The one I bought from SPX was around 2 Grand and it came with a cart and all the different attachments. Maybe if you tell them it can be used for so many things beyond EVAP testing. It’s great for cooling system leaks; you know the ones that are leaking so bad from the underside that you have to fill the system with coolant to find the source? Now you have coolant dripping all over the place, most times in your eyes while you’re looking for it. I stuff the nozzle of the smoke machine into the rad neck and wait for the smoke. Under hood exhaust leaks is another place I’ve used the machine. You can hear the leak but just can’t find it because it’s under a heat shield or it goes quiet after a few seconds of running the engine. Connect the machine to the tail pipe, turn the machine on and go for a coffee; by the time you’re back the smoke will be pouring out of the leak. There are a few other places we’ve used the thing and maybe you shouldn’t mention the fun we’ve had with it. But you should see the reaction from a customer when they see smoke pouring out from under the hood of their car and you go running out the door covering your head with your hands. They’re usually right on your heels and not knowing why, fight or flight they usually pick flight. Man it’s good being the owner of a shop at times; I’ve only did this to one guy and boy was he pissed. LOL Dan. Canadian "EH"

Dealer finally called back and said the solenoid may stay open as long as the engine load does not change. This seems kinda wierd to me since the purge solenoid needs to close so the evap test can run. But I guess they are the experts on the vehicle. thought I would relay the info I got.
