2001 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L
Codes:
P0340
P1684
P0118
Car sputters, loses rpms, and dies after engine warms. Won't start again til it's cooled off and dies again after warming. Also releases black smoke from tailpipe after idling at red lights.

Repairs made:
Changed camshaft, crankshaft, and engine coolant temperature sensors.

Still not running properly.
HELP!!!!!

If you unplug the cam sensor, does the engine start?

P0340 means the engine computer isn't seeing the cam sensor signal.

P0340 can set if the timing chain is broken, which will definitely cause a no start. Compression test will tell you if you have a valve timing problem. If the chain is good and camshafts are turning your going to have to test the cam sensor and see if the PCM is getting a signal from it. Best tool to use for checking cam sensor signals is a lab scope. You can check it with a volt meter to see if it is actually producing a signal, but you won't know what it looks like. Has there been any recent engine work done?

P0118 means the engine computer is seeing too high of a voltage on the engine coolant temperature sensor signal circuit. If the PCM is seeing closeto 5 V that means either the ECT is faulty, the ECT has a poor electrical connection, and/or there is an open circuit between the PCM and ECT. There could be a ground problem, but you might be getting a TPS code also because they share the same ground back to the computer. You can check the ECT signal and ground at the ECT with a volt meter back probed into the ECT connector. With the connector unplugged you should see around 5 volts on the tan/black wire with the ignition on from the PCM. You can check to see if the signal circuit and PCM is good by shorting the 5 volt signal wire (tan/black wire) to ground. That should cause the PCM to set a P0117 code for low voltage.

P1684 is showing up because you probably disconnected the battery and erased the PCM's memory. It could also mean the PCM lost memory power which could cause a stall or and no start problem too.

Thank you!! The only work that has been done is the replacement of the 3 sensors besides routine oil changes. It will start right up until it is warm. Have not checked any of the wiring. Before the new camshaft was put in we did unplug the bad one, and it started right up. Ran for a day, and then stalled/no start again until it cooled.
Is there a way to reset the PCM? Or would it be a good idea to replace it?
I will do the compression/ voltage tests today.
Thank you for responding!

If you want to clear the PCM's RAM, you can disconnect the battery. Why would you replace the PCM if you haven't done any diagnostic tests to confirm the PCM is the culprit?

I had it tested, and everything checked out. Come to find out the PCM has already been swapped with one from a 1999 model, but was working. My mechanic said it sounded like the fuel pump, so changed the fuel pump same problem. it starts and runs til it warms up then loses rpms and won't go, like it's not getting any gas. Then won't start. It turns over and tried to start, but feels like it isn't getting enough gas to get enough power to go. All the lights, electrical still works when it dies. I'm stumped.
Codes shown now are P1684 and P1489. The fan works fine. Kicks on at the proper time.
