Year: 2001 Make: Mazda Model: Protege Engine size: 1.6L 110,000km The car is getting about 60km on a quarter tank of gas, which is very bad. I have the same car, one year older, that gets 150kms to a quarter tank. The car runs totally smooth. We have done some research and found that most times a P1170 code means bad front oxygen sensor. I have made a video of the voltage that the oxygen sensor outputs when going through revving cycles. Apparently normal working sensors output 0.45-0.5v when at idle. When car accelerates, it goes up to 0.9v, and down to 0.1v during deceleration. Do these erratic readings mean the oxygen sensor is gone bad? Also, the oxygen sensor reads 0.112v when the engine is OFF. Here is the link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lgtGUVW9Pw&feature=youtu.be

No, that's not how a working 0/2 sensor reads. It reads low until it gets heated up and once it;s up to temp it's supposed to constantly cross count from real low to real high and back again. The more frequently it ranges, the better it is working. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Any idea what could be causing my bad mileage then? Let me remind you the car runs VERY good, better than my older one does. I have other research saying it could be either a clogged EGR valve, or misreading MAF. But the car sucks in air quite good. The car has a lot of power. Sometimes I get a funny smell when I run her through to 6,000rpm, and then park it. Kind of like sulfur, but not really. Almost smells like unburnt fuel.
