2002 BMW X5 Codes PO011 and PO492 Sign In

Anyone have any idea what these codes (PO011 and PO492) are and what to do about fixing them??? I had it scanned at Advance Auto it said something about the airflow and cam but I didn't get a copy of the slip so later I'm going to AutoZone they give me a slip with more info on it... It has a 3.0 eng and it runs fine!!! What I am thinking is maybe something with the cam sensor going bad and messing up the combustion that triggered and airflow problem??? I will repost later with the info from AutoZone, but maybe for now someone here might have had an experience like this before??? Thank You!!! Rich

The light has not come back on yet since AdvanceAuto reset it and cleared the codes so I will have to wait but maybe someone out there had the same problem... Forgot to also mention this happened 6months ago with the same codes and same problem, cleared codes and nothing till now??? Maybe it could be too much ethanol in the gas for one tank???

I dont personally know the answer to the code
but i do want to say that i will never put ethanol in my car yet it may be 5-10 cents cheaper but ethanol burns faster than gas so it saves you no money and it causes you car to wear out faster thus costing you MORE money.

You can't buy gas without any ethanol in it any more. It all has at least 10%

It's all 10% at this end of the country. I didn't think there was any regular left. It's a real problem for outboards here on the coast.

Re: 2002 BMW X5 Codes PO011 and PO492 Sign In

Those are variable valve timing & secondary air injection codes.....

I don't do a whole lot of Euro but on the domestic & asians alot of times the cam actuator starts sticking or the screen gets plugged.... If the actutor sticks the cam stays too far retared and cam, crank signals get too far out of sync and the code sets.... At 1st you may not notice a performance problem but the longer & farther out it stays you could notice a power loss or even rough idle...

The P0492 is for the seconday air system, basically there is a problem with the air pump system. The comp isn't seeing the blast of extra air when it wants to so it set the code... The system would have to be checked with a bi-directional scanner..... You could check all the fuses. A blown fuse could cause this code to set but remember fuses don't normally blow for no reason.........
