2002
Ford
Focus
4 cylinder, 2.0 (beast)
122k miles
Manual Transmission

I bought this Focus about a week ago now, and got it for really cheap which means I expect problems. I'm also going to preface this by saying I do know how to drive a stick, and have been working miracles in the driving department since 1998. I learned how to drive a stick on a '95 Isuzu Rodeo, may she rest in peace. Got T-boned by a drunk driver when I was 20 and I was stone cold sober...and angry to this day. She saved my life several times, including the one that took her to Rodeo heaven.

That being said, I went to Advanced Auto for the free computer reading, and the computer read "P0720" from my check engine light. She revs up but acts likes the gears aren't catching. When I start out in first, it takes forever and a day to catch, and once the gears finally catch and I go to accelerate, the car really doesn't go much. She just revs, and then when I let off the gas, it catches again, but still not really any ACTUAL acceleration. I know I'm not driving a Z28 here, but I do expect to be going faster than 20mph by the time I get done winding out 3rd gear. Even when I am in 3rd or 4th gear, if I accelerate, I get nothing but revving until I take my foot off the pedal, unless i'm going downhill. I say the downhill bit part jokingly, part not. I get this all the way through my fifth gear. When I put it in reverse, I get a little lag, but nothing like how it is going forwards in all of my other 5 gears. I know it can't be good for the transmission, nor clutch. I'm seeing this problem is kind of widespread for this model and year, but I don't want to go and buy parts I don't need. Anyone know FOR SURE 100% that it's the Output Speed Shaft Sensor? Yes, I do realize I didn't write an encyclopedia Britannica on this though. It's 4am, and I'm functioning after a long day at work...barely...

If you have fixed it, where's a cheap place to get the replacement part and good brand of part(if multiple brands exist)? I'm hoping that when I bought this cheap car, that the repairs won't make it more expensive to fix and keep than to get rid of. I don't want to hear my wife saying "I told you that you shouldn't have bought it". It's never a good feeling when you hear those words...they are like kryptonite to all pride filled men. They make you want to run away from the sound of them.

What you are describing is a burned out clutch. It sounds like you have likely burned out the flywheel too by this time.

that's what I originally thought too, but would that cause it to slip out of gears even after the clutch is fully released and the gears fully "enacted" or what I would say is the having the gear catch all the way?

Only reason I ask is because in every other car, truck, and such that I have driven with a dying or dead clutch, it only slipped going into the gears and I never had a problem with it once the gears "caught". So the clutch that is slipping/dying would make the car lag extremely once the car is already in gear and I push on the gas pedal? If so, great...I guess. Guess it means I bought a car with a crap clutch(and now fly wheel too). I can only hope it's a cheaper fix.

The clutch is what mechanically couples the engine to the transmission. If it is slipping the engine is going to rev and the vehicle isn't going to accelerate. The gears inside the transmission don't slip and cause what your describing.

You won't know if the output speed sensor is good until you test the sensor and its circuit. Do a visual of the sensor itself, the connector, and the wiring to start out. OSS won't cause your slipping clutch symptoms.

wonderful...well at least the frame hasn't fallen out of the car completely yet too. I did get a decent deal on the focus, but I guess I'll know if I got a true deal when I fork over the money for the clutch...thanks for the help.

I'm new to the whole DIY game of the car world, so do you happen to know what part # I need to get moving on this? I have a friend who is allowing me to borrow some car jacks(the kind NOT on wheels) to use for replacing the clutch, but short of walking up into an Auto Zone and saying "I need a clutch for a 2002 focus manual", I don't know what to get. I am good when it comes to actually pulling the old off and putting the new on, but that's where I stop. My friend is a car guy, per say, but I don't want to have him fix my car for me. I want to do it so I know how to help my kid down the road. I can go to the store, order whatever I need to, break a knuckle or two putting the new one on(and love the bloodSmile ), but I would have no clue where to start with the part numbers and such for what I need to get.

I understand not wanting to show any particular manufacturer, distributer, nor supplier any favor on here, so if you need to private message me, feel free. You can also text me too if that works better for you guys. (xxx)xxx-xxxx.

Thanks, I really do appreciate all the help and advice/tips. hopefully one day I'll be showing my son what I'm learning now, and he better take care of his sisters car when I'm not around.

I deleted your phone number for security reasons. You don't want a bunch of weirdos calling you, do you? If you want to send your phone number to someone through private message or emails that is fine.

Basically, when you go to the parts store you tell them you need a clutch kit for your vehicle. You also need to find a machine shop that can resurface your flywheel.

You'll need more than some jack stands. You'll also need an engine support adapter and a transmission jack. You'll also need special tools such as torque wrenches. The service information is highly important, so you might want to review that to see what is entailed and if you feel like your up to the task of performing the job. Changing a clutch is not really something for a novice or a first time DIY. You might want to make sure that you have someone there watching you that has experience and knowledge of doing clutch R and R. Also the wife has to be available for support, food, and beer...LOL

Man, I don't see this ever being possible. He doesn't know which parts he needs or what they look like, how is he ever going to remove a front wheel drive transmission and align a clutch disc on the ground with no transmission jack?
