2002 Mazda Tribute Airbag light

I've been loving this site! Airbag warning light flashes and then stays on. This is an intermittent problem. Jiggled wires under seats and it stayed off for a few days, but has come back.. Have read the posts re: codes 46 and 47, but my Airbag light flashes 4 & 4. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Pinpoint Test 28: LFC 44/DTC U2017 - Driver-Side Crash Sensor Communications Fault
Normal Operation
The driver-side crash sensor monitors the severity of a crash event. If the crash event is severe enough, the sensor will signal the restraints control module (RCM) to deploy the driver-side air bag.
The RCM monitors the two-wire current loop to the driver-side crash sensor for a signal that is out of the expected range. If the RCM detects an out-of-range signal from the driver-side crash sensor, indicating a sensor communication fault, it will store diagnostic trouble code (DTC) U2017 and flash a lamp fault code (LFC) 44 (or a higher priority code if one exists) on the air bag indicator.
Possible Causes
A driver-side crash sensor communication fault condition can be caused by:
- damaged wiring on circuit (W/LG).
- damaged wiring on circuit (BR/LG).
- damaged driver-side crash sensor.
WARNING: The air bag diagnostic tool is for restraint system repair only. Remove from vehicle prior to road use. Failure to remove could result in injury and possible violation of vehicle safety standards.
NOTE: If a seat equipped with a seat-mounted side air bag and/or a safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system is being serviced, the air bag system must be deactivated using the appropriate deactivation procedure in this section.
NOTE: Restraint system diagnostic tools MUST be installed under the seats in the side air bag and safety belt pretensioner to floor connectors.
NOTE: Diagnostics or repairs are not to be performed on a side air bag system and/or a safety belt preten- sioner (if equipped) system with the seats in the vehicle. Prior to attempting to diagnose/repair the side air bag system and/or safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) system the seats must be removed from the vehicle and the restraint system diagnostic tools must be installed in the side air bag and the safety belt pretensioner (if equipped) connectors at the floor connectors. The restraint system diagnostic tools must be removed prior to operating the vehicle over the road.
NOTE: Diagnostics may be performed on seat systems other than the
side air bag or the safety belt pre-tensioner (if equipped) system
(lumbar, climate controlled, heated, power seat track) with the seat
installed in the vehicle as long as the restraint system diagnostic
tools are installed under the seats in the side air bag and safety belt
pretensioner to floor connectors.

Thank you for such a quick reply! I have a trusted auto repair shop, but is this something I 'need' to have done only at the dealer? I suppose my shop may not have the right diagnostic tools and I will call them tomorrow about that. Dealerships just really put a hurt on my bank account!

"Trusted" and "qualified" mean two entirely different things and I couldn't tell you if your show represents either. Airbag diagnosis/repairs require some up to date equipment and training. Call them and ask them if this is an area that they are equipped to handle. Many independent shops are capable but not all.

Excellent replies/posts on this Hammer. Not surprised.
jesaispas: My take on website suggestions and DIY repair or even your trusted shop should direct you to the Qualified shop even if it takes a dealer. Forget the bucks as IMO with this in particular that seems to have responded to "wiggling" wires scares me.
Think of the scenario. If air bag(s) deploy when they shouldn't or don't deploy when they should either situation could be harmful or fatal or historically has been.
Please don't let saving a buck get in the way of the best possible qualified repair of this!

HammerTime i have a question as it relates to this thread, I too have the same situation with the airbag light and flash codes. It will flash intermittently four then three then four then seven flashes then it stays on. Is this code saying that there is a communication problem with the crash sensor? thanks
