2003 GMC Sierra 4.8 4x4 P0106 Sign In

Hope everyone is doing well. Haven't talked to you guys forever. Have had a lot going on. Anyways, after work yesterday truck was running fine. All of the sudden it started running superrands rough. Rough enough to where it almost died. It hard no power whatsoever. Was barely able to pull into a parking lot nearby. Got it home on a trailer and scanned for codes. P0106. Not sure if it's relevant but the fuel pump has had a slight whistle for awhile. I haven't had a chance to check things over for but will after work. What steps should I take here? Map sensor, fuel pump, vacuum leaks?

Thanks for the help

Hey stranger

That code indicates a problem with the MAP sensor circuit. That measures engine vacuum so check the wiring and any possible vacuum loss first, then maybe you have a bad sensor.

If you have a scan tool you can look at the MAP data. It will vary from 0 to 5v.

Trouble Code: P0106 MAP Sensor Signal Range/Performance
So start by inspecting MAP sensor, harness, and seal where it plugs into manifold. Then look for vacuum leaks, use the old school spray trick - effective, cheap fast.

Sounds like a vacuum leak to me - anything done lately?

Yeah HT, really miss coming here. Life has been getting in the way and haven't had time for anything. We all know how that goes tho.

Haven't had to do anything to the truck for quite some time so nothing should have been left unhooked or knocked loose. It ran fine on the way to work and for about 10 minutes after. CEL started flashing and then instantly starting running like crap. Didn't really think about it until now but after work it took a split second longer to start and low fuel light was on but went off as I pulled away. It had just under 1/4 of a tank so it might have been because it was parked on an angle. I usually fill up at 1/4.

I'll check for leaks and harnesses after work and we'll go from there.

Thanks againm

Not home yet but had scanner in wife's vehicle at work. It does have some live data. For map sensor it read 22.5 in hg. What reading should I be looking for on the Sierra?

That's a vacuum reading. There should be a voltage reading in there somewhere.

Re: 2003 GMC Sierra 4.8 4x4 P0106 Sign In

The scanner doesn't have map voltage. It's only like a $250 scanner so it's pretty limited.

I think it was just out of gas and the sending unit is bad. I haven't had a vehicle run out of gas since high school and it didn't act like this did. It probably ran for 10 minutes or more while I pulled somewhere safe and when I put it on and off the trailer. When I got home it started for a few seconds and died but the low fuel was on again even tho it read 1/4 yesterday. I usually fill up every 5th day when working at the power plant I'm currently at. I was gonna get gas after work. But, I did do a little extra driving over the weekend.

I'll probably just replace the whole pump while I'm at it. The pump has been whining for awhile so don't wanna have to go back in. So, should I pull the bed or drop the tank? I should replace the fuel filter too but know I'm going to need new lines. They're rusty bad. I had to do brake lines last year after a hard brake caused a half inch hole to blow out. I'll have to wait until this job is done but we only have about a week left.

Thanks for the help.

Pull the bed or drop the tank is your preference. I usually jack up one side of the bed, enough to get under there and access the tank. I leave the bolts in loose on the right side to work as a hinge and lift it at the wheel well with a pole jack. Just make sure ou put safety blocks in there before sticking your hear in there..

Good to see ya in here. Wondering where you ran off to. Hope things are going good besides the truck acting up. Don't be a stranger!
