2007 Toyota Matrix, 1.8L, approx. 400,000miles (odometer stopped at 299,999) Multiple OBDII codes related to the EVAP system: P043F EVAP Leak Detection Reference Orifice High P043E EVAP Leak Detection Reference Orifice Low P2401 EVAP Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit Low P2402 EVAP Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit High P2419 Evaporative Emission System Switching Valve Control Circuit Low Seems likely the EVAP canister needs to be replaced. Questions: Could it be something in addition to the EVAP canister or not the EVAP canister at all? Is there something simpler (and cheaper!) I could try first? How likely do you think it could be as simple as the gas cap? I've seen this suggestion a lot when Googling this problem, but I inspected the gas cap and it appears fine to me. It's only about 10 bucks for a new one, but I don't want to throw that money away if it won't fix the problem. If the gas cap were obviously cracked, the seal appeared damaged, or the cap didn't click when I tighten it (none of which are the case), I'd replace it no question. Thanks for any help!

Since the leak detection pump and vent valve are built into the canister, you are probably right about it being bad. It could also be an issue with related wiring. Make sure you test all your fuses first. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
