If the DLC doesn't have power most code readers won't work.... Check all your fuses....

Double check all the battery connections to make sure they are clean and making a good contact,,,the grounds especially, also check the engine & body grounds...

They came back over that evening and said they disconnected the batt. while it was running to see if the alt. was good , this was after they were having the erratic dash problems , still not recommended thought right ?

Dr. D - You should have read enough here already that's so old there's dirt older than that. Don't even go there anymore if it had one problem before now you could have tons more.

For the record that was always a hack trick when you were SURE a vehicle was using a GENERATOR not alternators, two different things. Don't ask I guess wrong but think generators for vehicles in common use was done by about mid 1960s for alternators do essentially the same work and take up less space and weigh less and can work harder at lower RPMs or they'd still be out there - not any more,

Re: 2010 wrangler link error ,happy 4th Sign In

I thought you did. Reason is an alternator requires power to operate and removing that it's now sucking anything it can find with residual power and can wreck those items into insane costs. It's easy enough to just put damn voltmeter on one of these or many and look at the voltage then turn on items the use a low of power, fans and lights all on if it holds in range that much is good. Doesn't show intermittent problems or how long anything will last but the fastest strong clue you don't need to check more at all.
Anyone who thinks you should do that should NOT be touching a vehicle for work. I don't even think many are still alive who remember that and wasn't a great idea then either - just filling in the blanks on the problems.
The term Generator is still used. A different bird if one is turned if by motor or you rigged it in a vice and spun it by pulley makes 12V then regulated elsewhere. Just not for automotive use that I know of at all in anything.

Carry on with real problems and hope that didn't cause a whole nightmare on top! T

The main reason it should ever be done is because it causes the voltage to spike and raises all kinds of havoc with electronic modules.
