95 Ford Ranger - codes

No problem really, just a question. I have a 1995 Ford Ranger 4.0L V-6. I just bought a CAN/OBD2 code reader. This truck was built in the transition year. I have searched everywhere for an OBD1 connector. It just isn't there. I do have an OBD2 connector on the dash below the steering column under a little removeable panel. Is it possible that this truck was built late in the year and only has the OBD2? Is there an easy test I can do to inject a code in the system and see if it reads it properly?

If there is the OBD II connecter under the dash, then that is the system you have.
You could disconnect your MAF sensor & start the truck.... You should get a P010X code, probably a P0101....

I don't know if Ford did it or not but i know GM did put OBD2 connectors along with an OBD1 system in that year so it is possible. You shouldn't have to induce a code just to find out if the code reader works though. It should be obvious if you are actually accessing the PCM or not.

When I plug the code reader in it powers up but as there are no codes in memory it does not report anything. I guess that is good. I just thought if I could induce a code I could verify it was working on that vehicle, as everything I read says 95 Ford Ranger should be OBD1. I will try unplugging a sensor to see if it reports it correctly. Thanks.

Can you retrieve any sensor data or go through a clearing sequence without an error message.

It is not the high priced professional model so I don't know if I have the ability to call up sensor data. I did do a "Clear" and did not receive an error message.

I know you don't have a professional scan tool. That would cost you about $10,000. They do make the generic readers that read data for under $100.

Ford's repair manual gives OBD II codes for the 95 Ranger. It does not list any for the EEC IV. So it is OBD II compliant.
Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
