I have a 1997 Ford Escort that im trying to get to pass DEQ. the emissions and smoke test all pass. Whats holding me back is I have 3 unreadys and they only allow 2. The catalyst is unready, the o2 sensor is unready and the o2 heater is unready. i have driven well over 1500 miles since the brain was rebooted. I dont have a lot of money to spend on this car and i dont really want to take it to a mechanic if this is some thing i can fix on my own. I'm wondering if i replace the o2 sensor, will it fix my problem? or am i fighting a losing battle? Please help.(sorry if im posting in the wrong area)

Once started, the engine must not be turned off during the OBD II Drive Cycle. A strict observance of posted speed limits is required for a safe completion of the drive cycle. NOTE : For the 5.4L/6.8L E-Series applications only, perform Step 2 before Step 1 of the following OBD II Drive Cycle. Start the engine and drive the vehicle: - Drive in stop-and-go traffic for 20 minutes with at least 4 idle periods. One acceleration at more than 1/2 throttle is necessary on the Escort/Tracer and Probe applications.
- Drive on expressway or highway for 10 to 15 minutes. Access and monitor the IAT PID on the scan tool during the entire highway drive. Heavy accelerations, sudden decelerations or wide open throttles are not recommended on any vehicle.
NOTE : If the IAT PID is less than 4°C (40°F) at any time during the highway drive, the Evaporative Emission Monitor will not complete. - Access the On-Board Readiness Menu on the scan tool to check monitor completion status.
- Rerun Continuous Memory Self-Test to check code P1000 status.
- If the Evaporative Emission Monitor on Taurus/Sable, Crown Victoria/Grand Marquis, Town Car, Mark VIII, Explorer/Mountaineer, Windstar, 4.2L/4.6L/5.4L F-Series/E-Series, 4.6L/5.4L Expedition, and 6.8L E-Series is the only monitor not showing completion status on the scan tool and the P1000 is cleared, the OBD II Drive Cycle is completed.

Do you have any current or pending codes stored in the engine controller? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

no codes just the unreadys. Im trying to get a hold of an obd II scanner and take it through its drive cycles. but if i have driven it for over 1500 miles shouldnt the drive cycles be ready by now? as you can probably tell im not very mechanical and dont know much about cars.

The scan tool isn't going to help you get through the drive cycles any faster. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

The O2 heater monitor should have ran after a cold start. If the heater monitor doesn't ready and pass, the other two monitors listed won't run. You sure there are no pending codes being stored? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
