Buying OBD2 diagnostics tool - need help
Folks, Looking at buying a diagnostic tool from Sears, 100.00 on sale, model 87702. It does not seem to read the ABS failures, etc, that is I think it sounds like the ABS system can throw a code, but I do not think this 87702 would read it. Am i correct in my thinking? should i move up to a tool that can do a bit more than only retreive / clear the OBD2 codes? what happens if service engine soon lite is on due to the ABS system and you try to read the code w/ a tool that cannot? Can that happen? Could tool display like " this code invalid, or something like that? I want to buy the right tool, but a little more info. will help. thx

None of that stuff is in the caliber of what we use. ABS accessibility varies dramatically from one vehicle to another and the abilities of the readers will vary also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Usually ABS problems won't store codes in the PCM. What is the year, make, model, and engine size of your vehicle? Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I'm a diy guy and asked a similar question awhile back. The response I got was that it really depends on what I want to do with the scanner. In order to get one that the mechanics here use we'd have to spend thousands on one. I've thought about buying a simple one for now so I could at least read and clear codes. I may also save up and buy a decent one down the road. I still have a lot to learn about the diagnostics side before I decide to drop the money on a high dollar one though. Stick around the forum and get to know the mechanics here. Discretesignals and Hammer Time already offered to buy me one for Christmas!

I can tell you one thing, those stimulus and handouts from the government sure didn't pay for it...LOL. The total amount of wrench spinning I had to do to pay for the scope is equivilent to unscrewing a bolt that is 50 miles long...and fine pitch too. Picoquad 4000 kit isn't too bad. $2350 + tax. All you need is a laptop. Santa Claus could fit it down your chimney. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
