1996 Toyota Tacoma 4 cylinder, 4wd, reg cab
I recently had to get a Cali smog test but first had to deal with an engine light issue. The guys at the garage i went to told me it was the Induction System and it had to be cleaned including the Airflow Meter.
I had the service done and the light reset. Just a few hours later the light went back on. I called them and the said "we thought that might happen", 'it's the cold air intake valve" it'll cost $293 dollars to fix.
My first question is ...
1.- is this indeed the issue?
2.- am I getting duped? to tell me the day after I spend hundreds to get my engine light issue fixed by cleaning the induction system, they tell me that was not the issue and this valve needs to be replaced. I'm feeling like a bait and switch.
Can anyone help me out?

on my report there is a code called
P0171 Fuel System Too Lean Bank 1
I can scan and email the whole report if you'd like to see it? I'm curious about your professional opinion on this work.

That means the engine is running lean for some reason. I wonder if they looked at the fuel trim and determined what engine speed the engine is running lean at? I read your repair order. They indicated the code number on the report, but didn't quite determine what was causing the lean code to appear. The RO doesn't show the testing they did to determine why the lean code was popping up. They assumed that the intake being dirty or fuel filter was the cause of the O2 sensor showing lean. They did fix the turn signal though.
When ever you get a code like that you need to verify that the fault actually exists. In this case the lean code means you should monitor fuel trim to see if the computer is actually compensating for a lean condition. If a lean condition exists, you need to determine why. This is where experience and knowledge of diagnosing drive-ability problems comes into play. I'm not going to go into how this is done because I could fill up this whole thread with complicated stuff.
Once you determine the cause and correct it, the most important thing is to verify the fix before handing it off to the customer. According to the repair order they didn't verify the repair. They used you to verify the repair and their fix didn't work.
To a shop this is considered a comeback. They have to diagnose it for free this time, but if it needs parts your still going to have to pay for the parts and the labor to install them.
This is your decision. Do you want to give them a second chance in fixing your problem or get a second opinion from another repair shop?

Hmmmm...
they want to charge me $293 for the cold air intake valve. Do you think that is the fix and that it is worth it? I'm clueless here.

Tell them you'll only do it if you get a free muffler belt, a gallon of blinker fluid and your own left-handed metric crescent wrench. Also ask what weight their snake oil is.
