Few questions about fixing my EGR (p0401 code) Sign In

My car is a 2000 buick century 3.1

here is some pics of it: http://imgur.com/a/UrEYe

I'm going to try to clean out my EGR system to see if that's the reason i'm getting the p0401 code, but i never really worked on a car before but after watching this youtube video: link deleted .................. not allowed
it looked like something me and my friend could do.

So the video pretty much says all i need is a coat hanger and some carb cleaner, is that true? Also i guess i need to remove the throttle body to get the carbon in there too? should i start it up for a second with the EGR and throttle body removed to blow out any loose carbon?

If you have any advice for me i'd love to hear it.

Just a note on carbon build up on things like an EGR if code really means the part or circuit. If carbon is that bad it was caused by something else. Usually neglect of something routine.

IMO you have a 50/50 shot at carb cleaner fixing a carbon problem for an EGR or not. By the time you need a coat hanger to clear out carbon it's probably too late for a lot of things,

If a plugged passage is actually your problem, then you are on the right track to resolve it.

And no don't run the engine with the throttle body removed.

We have connecting rod separation as the USS Crankshaft makes its maiden voyage on its mission to recover the Hubble telescope!
