My Little Chariot PASSED!!!!!! Sign In

Well, I bit the bullet and took her back in for reinspection (praying the whole way). The chariot passed with flying colors!! 150 miles and still no CEL. I did purchase a fuel filter that I have to go try to put on now. Never done that before so wish me luck.

Thanks again for all the great advice. I will return to this forum often.

Let the celebration begin!

Glad to hear it worked out and thanks for getting back that it did.

You can be "proactive" and prevent troubles just taking care of the routine items as suggested. I'll suggest that periodic injector cleaner in the fuel can help and my current fav is Techron.

Good luck with the car,

T

Thanks Tom. I will put that on the list of things I need to do for the ole girl. She probably needs a tune up too.

What do you think about a radiator flush? Just about every time I take her up there for an oil change they mention it but I just assumed they were trying to make extra cash from me. How often should I do that? Is that something easy I can do myself?

Thanks,
Blessedpilot

Tune up items yes - ask for original equipment parts. Cooling system - if it looks ok with what you can see I would suggest changing it out for fresh and a careful "rinse" of the rad, engine and heater core but go easy about force flushing and machines as those could cause problems.

Consider trans fluid and filter service too.

Other things that get notoriously neglected are all lock and hinges, on doors, trunk, hood. Use WD-40 on moving latches quite regularly and spray grease for hard metal hinges and hood latch. Spray or grease up battery cables/connections and on the 4.6 especially spray a greasy rust proofer where the wiring goes to starter motor! Here they get corroded easily from road dirt/salts and cause bigger troubles at they don't come apart later to clean up if/when needed.

Take a good look at the belt too. If you have some money for more get the brakes bled out for fresh fluid in the system, same with power steering - just suck out fluid and properly refill a couple times as again I'm worried about machine flushing so change it by dilution with new.

There are several things you can do to avoid troubles that just make good car sense. The injector solvent I especially like as I swear the alchohol used in gasolines causes issues and that's one way to help,

T

How much of these things are you apt to do yourself or have it all done? Some doesn't require a lot of expense and isn't difficult.
