1999 lincoln town car 4.6L engine.no driveability problems.emission inspection coming up.post cat 02 switching alot bank 2.ltft for both banks are within 10%.doesn't sound like any exhaust leaks.mode 6 data no 02 or pending 02 codes.mode 6 cat over limits.customer bought used and car lot fixed a misfire problem cleared light and bought as is and days later light came on.its been 6 months now since bought car.few questions.....a degraded cat would cause no driveability problems unless degraded to a point where it is plugged up?at what point does a cat plug up?take to someone that has a gas analyzer to test hc,co readings before and after cat?or just replace cat?chances are it is bad.I didnt check for high fuel pressure with fuel trims good.any suggestions?thanks in advance.

That code is nearly always a bad Cat. It's telling you that it is not chemically doing it's job any longer. That alone will not cause any driveability issues. The way the computer determines this is by monitoring the front and rear 0/2s and when they start to mirror each other, that tells you the cat isn't doing anything. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

thanks...The flow chart says to test for high fuel pressure, exhaust leaks or rich lean condition.always Leary of replacing expensive component enless can prove bad and without a gas analyzer its hard to do.some of the cheap cats trigger mil so have to get a good quality one.autozone one is cheap.alldata list ford with federal emissions for 1150 and with california emissions one for 1500 not counting diagnostics.why so high?thanks hammer for advice.

I don't think you're going to replace that one with an AutoZone part. They are just universal cats that have to be custom fitted. Your best bet is to go to an exhaust specialty shop. If there is an aftermarket available, they can get it and get it installed correctly.

If you have a Midas Muffler near you, they can get the Ford OEM style cats. We use them quite often on our cruisers. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

buck: What's out for bargain and non OE spec parts. If "way2old" says Midas is selling good stuff then they probably are - nation wide but would ask. Stuffs expensive and poor quality can actually make it more expensive for the long run, T
