P0455 Troubleshooting

Hey y'all, I have a 2005 Ford Crown Victoria P71, I was running an intermittent p0446 code (Evaporative Emissions Control Circuit Malfunction), today it just came up with p0455 (Evaporative Emissions Control System Leak Detected (Gross Leak)), I have been getting random strong fuel odors while driving, not sure where to start looking around, and really don't feel like going to the dealer for diagnostic. Any input would be greatly appreciated
Vehicle Information:
2005 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (VIN:W) 4.6L V8, 187095 miles when code popped.
Wal-Mart: Auto Care Center Service Manager

If you don't want to pay a shop to diagnose this then just head out to the tool vendor and buy yourself a smoke machine and then smoke test the system yourself. You should be able to get one between $1,000 and $1,500.
My opinion, the shop diagnostic charge would be cheaper.
More advice............ don't go to WalMart for this.

Inspect the vent control solenoid at the evap canister at the rear of the vehicle. Check there isn't any damage to the wiring or connector. As HT stated you may need access to a scan tool that can do bidirectional control and EVAP smoke tester.
Another problem area is where the filler neck goes into the tank. The rubber grommet rots out and leaks. The gas cap seal is something else to check out. The EVAP leaks won't cause a P0446 though. That is an electrical issue.

Lol Hammer I don't go to Walmart for anything but my tires, but yeah i have really never delved into evap diagnostics so didn't know if it was a specialty tool or not.
As for the 2nd response, I know the gas cap is new, replaced it when I bought the car due to ratcheting mechanism in it being busted, but only get one day off so figured I'd shoot for a list of places to check before I get into and forget something.
But Hammer Time in your experience how much does the typical smoke test run? As you said its probably world's easier to have that done .

Most shops I know charge about one hour labor so it depends on what their labor rate is. The average is $80 to $100 at independent shops. Dealers would be higher.
