P0480....Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit- HELP!!!

My 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier 2.2l was put into a snowbank a week ago, and the car overheated, the fan was clogged with snow. The car than gave out the code P0480....Cooling Fan 1 Control Circuit, and my cooling fan will not turn on anymore. I replaced the cooling fan relay in the under the hood fuse box, but this did not fix the problem. What could possibly be the problem? I am thinking i may have broken the cooling fan when all the snow was packed into it? Any ideas on what i can do to fix this?

Josh; Check for power and ground at the connector for the fan. If you turn the heater control to defrost or A/C with the ignition on, you should have power and ground. You can also, while the connector is off, supply a false 12V and ground to see if the fan runs.

Good reply for an easy check.
I’ll only add and if I’m not mistaken is that the engine will need to be running and a functioning AC system will be required?
The PCM will not authorize cooling fan until the AC pressure sensor reaches a certain pressure.
Engine not running, AC request ignored by PCM, no AC pressure, no fan request from PCM; in turn no power from relay sent to fan motor.
I know a lot of GM systems work this way; not 100% sure on this model; to lazy to look it up. LOL

Hey, Dan; Yes, I'm pretty sure you are right. Didn't even think of that! These newer cars.....geeeeezzzz. Sure glad you're out there! Getting pretty close to that trip? I'm green with envy!

ok thx for the help first off-
now- iv torn the fan out- tested the fan- works fine- needed tightening-
but than went turned on the car a/c on full blast and used a testing light on the plug- and it had nothing!
dumb question- but now what haha?

Check out Dan D.'s post. The fan probably won't come on until needed, as sensed by the PCM via temp sensor. Many of these won't command the fan 'on' until engine temp reaches 230-235F. Hopefully, Dan is still hanging around and can help. He is much more familiar with this than I.

ok lol- i am a complete idiot!
the 30A fuse under the hood for cooling fan was blown- and i even checked all those fuses when i was rippin the fan out- and i didnt even acknowledge the fact that the 30A didnt light up.... fidured it just wasnt an active system-
