P1296 code for a '96 Mitsubishi Eclipse? Sign In

Year of vehicle: 1996
Make of vehicle Mitsubishi
Model of vehicle Eclipse
Engine size 2.0L
Mileage/Kilometers:183,000
Took the car to Advanced Auto Parts yesterday and this is code that came back (P1296). The car often will die at red lights, stalls, or will accelerate and then slow down suddenly on the highway, very scary. I did a Google search and this code for my car came back with "No 5 Volts To MAP Sensor". What does this mean exactly, and what do I need to do to fix it? Any help is appreciated, thanks so much

The computer sends a 5 volt reference signal to the sensor and measures how much of it that it sends back. Many other sensors share that same 5v reference line and they aren't setting codes so the problem is likely close to the sensor.

So would it be a good idea to replace the MAP sensor in your opinion?

Nobody said that. You need to find your problem.

Like HT said since no other 5v ref codes are popping it could just be isolated to that circuit.
BUT you do want to make sure you have 5v at the sensor and it isn't a wiring problem...

You need to use a high impedance DVOM (digital volt ohm meter) to check this with. Using the wrong equipment could damage your computer. Years ago a rule of thumb was, if it's a digital DVOM then it has enough built in resistance to be safe. This is no longer true ( thank you very much CHINA). You need to make sure your meter has 10 megaohms of resistance. If the resistance is too low, this can allow too much current flow & damage the PCM. A guy I worked with spiked his Ford PCM (after repeated warnings) with one from that freight store. He couldn't understand why....He got the good one??? (the $10 one not the $3 one...Shocked)

If you have the correct meter. Disconnect the sensor, turn the key on (engine off) & carefully probe the connecter with the green/yellow wire. There should be 5 volts on that wire. If there is 5v, it's really looking like a bad sensor. Too be 100%, the ground and signal wire would need to be tested & the signal wire at the PCM. But that would be your call if you wanted to gamble....No 5v at the wire with KOEO and you have wiring/pcm problem and putting a sensor on it will fix nothing......
