Passat Sign In

Alright a have found myself trying to fix someone else's 2003 VW passat Gls 4 cylinder 1.8L turbo engine with 110,000 miles. I need some ideas as to what could be wrong. Plugged in the obd2 scanner and came out with p0300- random misfire detected
p0411- secondary air injector incorrect upstream flow detected
p0171- system to lean (bank 1)
p0301- cylinder 1 misfire detected
p0303- cylinder 3 misfire detected
p0304- cylinder 4 misfire detected
p0302- cylinder 2 misfire detected
p0507 idle air control system rpm higher than expected

Recently had coils replaced and timing belt replaced.

Re: Passat Sign In

Sounds like you have a pretty severe air leak somewhere.

Re: Passat Sign In

Would the best place to start looking for that be near the secondary air intake?

Re: Passat Sign In

The best place to start looking is under the hood. It could be anywhere. I doubt that air pump code has anything to do with the other codes. Most of those codes are related to the lean mixture.

Re: Passat Sign In

Like HT says....That leak could be anywhere

How is the car running now? Is it shaking really bad at idle?

A lot of the time, if there is a big vacuum, that could set those codes, you can hear a hissing sound coming from the engine...Take a look & listen and see if you can spot something that way...

While the secondary air system will have a vacuum line for the diverter valve, I would surprised as well if it was the cause for all the lean & misfire codes...

Re: Passat Sign In

The car runs rough at idle and shakes pretty bad at idle. But fine when running but even at a long stop light it will return to the rough idle. There is a distinctive hissing sound by the engine however the fan on the stupid thing blows so much air making impossible to feel a leak and the fan is so loud its making it difficult to pinpoint the exact location and the fact that it's a Euro car and why is there so much damn plastic under the hood.

I know this is asking a lot but you guys always seem to whip diagrams out of no where does anyone have a diagram for a vacuum system on a 2003 passat 1.8 turbo.

Re: Passat Sign In

One thing you can do is get a can of throttle body cleaner and start spraying around things.......If the idle picks up or smooths out then you are in the area of the leak....

Just use caution around electical components because the spray is flammable

Re: Passat Sign In

You will never feel a vacuum leak. It is sucking in, not blowing out. This is probably going to be beyond your ability to find.
