clearing a code Sign In

I got a code to replace my cam shaft sensor and I did, how do I go about now clearing the code so my service engine light will go off so I can see if there is any other issues needing to be addressed.

1997 Ford Taurus
130000 miles
6 cylinder
3.0ohv engine

If you don't have a code reader, you can disconnect the neg cable, turn the lights on and pump the brk pedal a bunch of times and then in about 5 minutes hook the cable back up.

This will reset the light and the KAM as well (learned adaptives) so the car may run slightly different for a day or so until the comp relearns the adaptives.............

thank you I will give it a try. If you don't mind me asking, why do you turn on the lights and pump the brakes?

It will help drain the capacitor so the system will lose all power & clear. You could just leave the battery disconnected by itself but then it would take longer to completely power down & clear.........

OR..........
  • The MIL will turn off after 3 consecutive ignition cycles in which the diagnostic runs without a fault.
  • A history DTC will clear after 40 consecutive warm up cycles without a fault.
  • A scan tool can clear the DTCs. (Alldata.com)
