2005 nissan pathfinder, 4 liter V-6, service engine soon light came on, no symptoms of any problem with emissions detected, however a rat or mouse got under hood and ate a couple of coolant hoses which I replaced. I just bought this vehicle a couple of weeks ago, used, with 19,500 mi. on it. the check engine light was not on, but after you clear codes they take a while to pop up again. I have an inexpensive CanOBD2 code reader made by innova, model 3100a the codes it reads are p0442 and p0456. both are evapporative emission system leaks detected (small and very small) Driveability and fuel economy seem uneffected. Do I need to service vehicle, and can I fix it myself?

buck; The EVAP codes (leaks) won't cause a drivability issue, but yes, you need to address them. A small leak can be a real pain to find. Visually inspect all of the hoses going from the engine compartment to the fuel tank. If you can't find the leak, a smoke test will. There is such a machine that introduces smoke into the system that can be seen with the naked eye or a black light. The problem with ignoring it, is if something else goes wrong, you won't know it because the check engine light is already on and you assume that it is because of the EVAP problem. When you go to run it through emissions, it will fail the test.
