I'm trying to get the old gas out of a 1996 Ford E150, 5.8L that has been sitting for 9 months. I got the fuel line disconnected from the filter, running into a jug, and I'm trying to pump it out using the van's fuel pump. The FSM says I can turn it on by putting a generic scan tool into "output test mode" by first entering the "OBDII system readiness test" and then entering in a string sequence that will switch it into this mode. The problem is, the Innova 3130e that I'm renting from Autozone does not seem to have either of these things. Do I need a different scanner? If so, which one? If not, what do i do different?

Of course it won't. You are comparing ToysRus stuff to professional tools. The scan tool you needs starts in the range of $5000. The easiest way to to pull out the fuel pump relay and jump the #30 and #87 sockets. Make a short jumper wire with a blade connector at each end. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Hmm, don't know where to get those blade connectors. Can't I just use a paper clip?

No, it will overheat. You can get wiring terminals at any automotive or hardware store.

Is there a minimum wire guage I should use then?

14 or 16 would be good. Finding a small piece of wire shouldn't be hard. It only needs to be about 3 inches long. Cut up an old extension cord if you need to. The paper clip has a plating on it that gets real hot real fast.

Those look like crimped and not soldered terminals, so I'm guessing that's ok, but are you saying that if I just cut a piece of 16 guage wire from an extension cord, I can stick that in there without the terminals?

No, I'm not saying that. I was just looking for a way not to have to go out and buy wire just for a couple inches. You're making this a lot more complicated than it needs to be, ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Ok, so you're saying the terminals are essential whether I buy wire or scavenge around the house for it?

Make sure you jump the right terminals in the relay socket or you'll be buying a new PCM. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

So I did what hammer suggested and I even got the terminals that were like he had in the photo from harbor freight. Seemed to work pretty good. My concern with this approach, however, is that it seems to arc quite a bit when putting the jumper in. Hope that didn't damage anything, although the van seems to run.
