unable to read codes Sign In

1994 chevrolet 454 in a motor home, engine running rough, check engine light on all the time. There is no wire connected to ALDL terminal A, I grounded terminal B, no effect, I grounded B-C-D-E and F one at a time, no effect, check engine light will not display code 12 or any other code. What do I do now?

Re: unable to read codes Sign In

Your vehicle is in a transition year where they used mixed systems and components. Some of them use and OBD2 connectors on an OBD1 system. These vehicles can only be read using a professional scan tool.

Re: unable to read codes Sign In

Thank you, thank you, will the auto store code reader ($130) do the job or do I have to get a pro with a $3000 code reader?

Re: unable to read codes Sign In

That one is probably going to require the $3000 tool unfortunately. The code reader only works with 100% OBD2.

Ah yes the old "brick" even tho outdate probably on of the more durable SO scanners. Not a bad idea.
.
I'll just toss out one more suggestion. Maybe take it to one of the parts places that'll pull OBD II codes for free & see if by chance it'll read it. If not you're really no worse off. If it does read it & you do want you're own code puller......there you go...
.
On a side note...... I can't tell you how bad of an idea that was grounding all those pins on a OBD II DLC.... I'm just glad you didn't run 12v to them.....

Re: unable to read codes Sign In

You are actually going to need an adapter that makes the OBD1 and OBDII compatable. You may be able to go to your local dealer(if there are any left around your area) and borrow one to read the code.

Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

Yes, but you will still need the scan tool that will come with that adapter already.
