Dear Friends Is there any shade tree method for bringing up a code on a 99 Ford Escort without buying a scanner?

Parts stores are giving you a free check. AutoZone was first with that but I'm also hearing they are not getting comprehensive readings?? Don't know as I've never done it but others have,

Tom, you look just like a cat!
But hey, even cats have heard about Autozone, although I didn't hear they were doing scans for free, I just heard they would rent you a scan tool. I will check into that. Thanks!

Auto zone will read out the codes free in the hope you will buy there parts
only thing is they can only read codes and say what you part need to
buy but as many automotive technician will tell you a code is not necessary a part
it could be bad electrical connections PCM/ECM . for example a o2sensor code that is reading lean does not mean you need a new o2sensor it could be a leaking manifold gasket or Vacuum loss think you all know what I'm trying to tell you . So if you are given a code investigate first like here on Car Junky no good buying a o2 sensor when the old one still works
