04 Malibu shake/no acceleration Sign In

04 Chevy Malibu
4cylinder 109,000 miles

Hi all,

This is what happens..

I get home, turn my Malibu off and go inside. If for some reason I need to leave the house again 30 minutes later, my Malibu shakes when I start it up, and for a second I think it's gonna die. It shakes especially when I begin to reverse. Orange check light is on.

After the first time this happened, I took it to Autozone for a diagnostic and they said heating coil misfire.

Luckily this hasn't happened when I HAD to be somewhere. Until Friday,I took my gf to work, and a half hour later, I left for my own work.

I decided to turn around because the car was not accelerating normally. RPMs went up but speed did not. I had the pedal down as if I were racing and there was a very weak response.

Now I noticed this symptom of little acceleration before, but I was only at Wal Mart down the street. I didn't feel comfortable with a 30 minute drive in rush hour.

This problem has not yet occurred when the car has been resting for more than an hour.

Hopefully someone can help because I just want to educate myself about this issue before taking it to a mechanic.

That receipt was misplaced the day after and due to this only happening once every 10-14 days (and money) I did not take the car in immediately. If it helps, the tester insisted heater/ing coil and showed me they run about 100$...

There is no such part. You need to have the codes read and post the exact numbers here.

Side note from first post:

If engine speed (RPMs) really went up and vehicle didn't go faster while in gear that's a real problem! What I mean is if it's slipping like you are in neutral. I doubt that is related to plain shaking or rough running engine but do check that trans is properly full of fluid,

. Will check... But wouldn't it have weak acceleration every time I drive if that were the case? This has only happened I think 6 times in two months

Usually if really slipping the ATF would be discolored and could be intermittent or getting fooled and my brain search isn't coming up with anything normal about a trans slipping. Drums being grabbed by band brake or bands and clutches rely on fluid pressure to actuate their action. Slipping will wear out those items quickly as they want to be locked tight.

Pressure may be better with colder ATF as it's thicker then. If while running you see bubbles in ATF when checking those bubbles can confuse the hydraulic pressure so ATF needs special anti-foaming properties which does lose it with age and miles temperatures and how it has been driven,
