Nissan Sentra 2004 1.8L, 245 000 km

As you can guess from the main subject, driving on highway, then all of a sudden it started with service engine light flashing and then some very rough idling whenever I'm at a stop, enough that I change it from D to Neutral to alleviate the shake. Went to garage ASAP. Compression test came back at 15PSI on cylinder 2 compared to 150/160 on the others.

Sadly, didn't think of asking what was the cause of the leak, garage was pretty straightforward in saying my engine was dying and I needed a new one...

Now, after the shock has passed, I'm wondering if it's fixable. I'm not shy of spending some $ to save that car. (Her name is Gertrude... long story)

What do you think? Piston ring? Valve? Let me know!

Anything is fixable for the right price but given the mileage you have, most everything in that motor is worn out and it wouldn't be practical to put that much into it. You need to be looking for another motor.

do spme testing - where is the compression 'going' a head gasket, a valve issue, piston ring or the piston itself - that would help with repair cost estimating.

I agree with Kevin. A cylinder leak down test is the next thing to do to find out where it is all going. Don't fall for the cylinder washed out trap either. Unplug the injector for that cylinder, pour a little oil down in the cylinder, and crank the engine for a few seconds to see if the compression returns in that cylinder.

Maybe the coil died or spark went somewhere else on that cylinder and it got washed out. Not sure if that year would disable injector if it detected a nasty misfire.
