Hello,

I failed an e-test two years ago due to a hole in my lower intake gasket (it failed on idle). I have another e-test coming up in two months and I'm not prepared to buy a new car at this time and I'd like to try to fix it. Has anyone here ever dealt with this? Can you give me any tips or horror stories?

Thanks for all your replies.

What #s were too high the last time? Some aren't that hard to lower. Could use some more info here, Tom Greenleaf

Okay, here's ALL the details.

This is 2 years ago. The vacuum leak is located near cyl #3. I pass the load tests but fail on idle due to the vac leak having more effect :

initial test (idle test only):
HC ppm (limit 200) 763 fail
CO % (limit 1.00) 1.92 fail

After changing spark plug #3 and the air filter (idle test only):
HC ppm (limit 200) 373 fail
CO % (limit 1.00) 0.41 pass

In my last e-tast 4 years ago a curb idle wasn't required, and before that e tests weren't mandatory in Ontario.

I'm assuming that due to the vac leak in the intake manifold, the mixture in the #3 cyl is too lean at idle and the fuel isn't burning correctly in the combustion chamber and getting into the exhaust and burning badly there (causing high HC).

Would this assumption be correct? And if so, can I expect my catalytic converter to be junk by now due to all these hydrocarbons?

Just want to make sure that this beast is worth fixing to get another few months out of it. I turn 25 in june and I have an accident that goes off of my record in august, I shudder at the thought of insurance costs on a new car before then.

Thanks alot!
