1992 Pontiac LeMans has no spark

Hi there: I have a 1992 Pontiac Lemans SE with the 1.6L 4cyl engine and am not getting a spark. The coil works as i have tried it in my other car, it's getting power when you turn the key on but there is no oscillation on the ground lead when cranking. I have replaced the pickup for the sensor in the distributor that tells the computer where the engine is in its rotation. The fuel injector fires when cranking so i know it's got a reference signal from the sensor but there is still no spark. I suspect it's the ignition control module which is apparently in the distributor and the pickup plugs into it but i dont know if it controls the fuel injector firing as well. Thanks! - Brian

You are probably correct about that if you have verified injector pulse and power to the coil. Here are the instructios for changing the Module REMOVAL - Remove distributor cap and rotor.
- Remove pick up coil.
- Remove two module attaching screws, and lift module up.
- Disconnect leads from module. Observe color code on leads as these cannot be interchanged.
- Remove module.
INSTALLATION NOTE: Be sure there is a sufficient amount of silicone grease on the metal face of the module and on the distributor base (where the module seats), when reinstalling the module. The purpose of the silicone grease is to cool the module. - Install module.
- Connect leads to module.
- Install module attaching screws.
- Install pick up coil.
- Install cap and rotor.

There are other possibilities including the wiring and the ECM but the ignition module is the most common and likely. Make sure your distributor is actually turning also. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Well, i replaced the ignition module, and it fired right up... Had to say i had doubts since the fuel injector was still firing, but i guess the old saying still goes: "The simplest solution is usually the correct one". Thanks all for your help! - Brian

The ignition module operates independently of the circuit for injector pulse. If you had lost injector pulse also, we would have looked at the crank sensor/pick up coil for a lost reference signal. The fact you had injector pulse proved that was working.
