1992 Toyota Pickup having very odd symptoms... Sign In

Hi,
I have a 1992 Toyota Pickup 2wd 22RE 5spd with 197,000 mi. Recently I drove it out of town and on my way down the freeway I noticed my engine would bog down suddenly. When I try to give it gas the tach would drop to about 6-800 rpms really fast then back to normal. I got back home and did some testing. I though it was a fuel issue so I had changed my fuel pump (already had a new one) and my fuel filter is brand new. Didn't help. So I noticed when I start my truck and let it idle, it's fine, but when I turn my headlights on it bogs down once. And with the lights on, if I press the brake pedal it bogs down once but even more so. With the lights off it doesn't bog down with the brake pedal. Also when on the highway if I use my turn signal it will bog down. When I really get on the throttle (like on the freeway) it runs fine, but trying to maintain speed or light acceleration will only cause it to constantly loose power about every 1-3 seconds. My tach bounces back and forth.
Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!
Jeff

check your battery connections (clean, shiny and tight at both ends), the condition of the battery, and the condition of the alernator. This sounds like an alternator going out but if the battery isn't good it needs to also be addressed. And since no electrical system is going to work any better than its connections, this needs to be known good as well. You probably don't have long before this leaves you stranded, and most parts stores will test alternators and batteries free of charge
