This is a 1994 Eunos 500, upscaled version of Mazda 626. Last night I went out to get some fast food, got home and noticed with engine running in idle that was excessively noisy. Like fan was running really hard or something, my thought was to wonder about heater core. Not sure why, but as it was dark and late (8-9pm) knew I would need to look into it later during daylight. This is a car that my wife normally drives to work, so I found out later that apparently this has been happening for couple of weeks now.

This morning while my wife was enroute to work, on the highway she noticed jerking and at first thought maybe wind resistance. But she realized it was the engine missing and running rough. After work, she tried to start the car and engine cranks but will not start.

So I need to go out tomorrow and look at it. Spark, fuel, etc issues. I am leaning more towards fuel pump or fuel regulator. But will know more when I get out there to have look at it. The issue that is bugging me, I am not understanding how the excessive engine noise I heard last night would tie into this. It could be separate and unrelated, but it is another trouble indication that I am sure should be pointing me to look at something. Just unsure what that might be. So ANY help would be greatly appreciated. Now I am kicking myself for not at least popping the hood, really should have but food getting cold and dark, sadly I did not. Or glanced at RPM gauge. Best I can describe is it sounded noisy, far noiser then just cooling fan, and without actually popping the hood, got impression it was more towards the rear of the engine or much closer to driver seat. And more like a noisy small motor then a fan anyway. Hence heater core sprang to mind.

There are a lot of maybes and unknowns here. You need to be a little more thorough with your information.

First thing.... find out if it has lost any coolant and if there are any overheating issues here before you go any further.

You also need to have the computer scanned for any stored codes that will help point in a direction.

We don't have this car in the US but we can supply generic answers.

Ha ha, they really do not have them here in Oz either, think it was only around 4 or 5 years before Mazda pulled the plug and gave up on expanding. Along with efini and Amati brands. Yes I realize there is not much to go on. I will find out a lot more tomorrow morning. But I do know many of the common things I need to be looking at, except for that excessive noise I heard and in which will not hear as it is not starting. Was just hoping that maybe that might point me to a direction, seems like it should but I am coming up empty and not seeing any correlation. What I can say is there were no prior heating issues, unknown about her trip to work this morning though. She could not even tell me if had check engine light on when she got home.

Anyway thanks for the response. Will not be able to get it scanned for fault code, sadly do not have that and would likely have it towed to mechanic if it gets to that point. As do not have funds to afford such tool. It only needed to run a couple more weeks before I could finish putting back together our Xtrail. $1100 to buy rebuilt head wiped me out and will not have rest to put it all back together for another fortnight or so. But that is another off topic issue. Who knows with luck, maybe it will fire up and can get it home in the am, will see.

It ended up being the Fuel pump. Replaced that and it started, but was lil concerned was an add'l underlying issue because it would only stay running when rev'd. Finished putting tank back up all the way, buttoned it all up. And then it ran fine even at idle. Got it back home and did not hear that excessive noise, but appears to be un-related. Great something else to be on look out for, but for the time being it starts and runs so this issue is resolved.

Good, we'll close this now as solved.
