Filled up all fluids and then drove 9 hours in a day. Next day, drove about 20 miles, car didn't overheat but died (filled up overflow as it was empty), got it restarted barely made it a mile. Ended up letting it sit few hours, then died going home. Next day checked and filled up radiator 1.5 gal or so with water (all I had). Took next few days for short trips around town, overheated once but never again. Barely lost water. Then today checked radiator everything full, got about 5 miles and it bucked a couple times like going to die but then regained power, got back home about another 3 miles, kept doing same thing. This time had slight burning smell almost not noticeable. Just replaced thermostat and water pump a week before it started doing all this. Battery and alternator tested fine. Only overheated once which I think was due to low coolant. Rest of the time no overheating or very, very, mild.

By all odds you've blown a head gasket. It's hard to need 1.5 gallons and not overheat so badly for whatever reason you found it that low would be extreme and died from just too dang hot if running at all now or just not well now? You could check spark plugs and compare them for one or more that don't look like the others meaning burning up coolant if not way too fast would clean them or maybe wet with coolant? Not good news at any rate. Do all the tests but this is strongly pointing to a head gasket and anything that will go with that, T

Hmmm...lets drive it for 9 hours with a known leak and drive it till it shuts off. <rolls eyes> If it didn't have a head gasket issue before, it probably does now. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

It still runs and drives, the only time fluid was that low was the next day after my 8 hour drive. Since then when I drove around town I barely have to put anything in or nothing at all. But also I have only drove about 30 min each time around town except today when it did the bucking and then regaining power and then doing it again.

DS - Here's your rolling eyeballs........ OP - The car is old enough to rot out a head gasket and more just anyway. Now you can smell it, lost that much water, know it overheated, doesn't run great, died at least once. That's a lot on the list to blame a head gasket and up to cracking or warping engine parts. Test it all out or send it out for a professional opinion. These problem do not have to all be the same symptoms as another and could change or be erratic. Some just pout coolant out tailpipe and remove all doubts or other super obvious issues. Just went thru this with another thread a person just can't believe it can happen - it can and IMO did but not there to verify myself so get another opinion so you feel better about what you want to do about this. They don't heal I can tell you that, T

The stalling part may be a separate issue, but the leak has to be found first. Best method to find external leaks is to pressure test the cooling system when the engine is cold. The stalling part can be caused by numerous reasons. Have you checked for trouble codes? Believe you have to jumper T1 to TE1 in the diagnostic connector under the hood and then turn the key on and count the number of flashes by the check engine light. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

When I drove it 9 hours it DIDN'T have a known leak- it had been repaired and fine, otherwise I would've driven it. I was giving a run down of what happened in order before it broke down the 2nd time after we had just replaced water pump and thermostat

It really doesn't matter the order of events - it's old and overheated - you said so. Have you done any checks that would rule out a blown head gasket? NO. It can't take that heat once if new everything. The assorted items all around engine compartment that run the show were all too hot too so it's wide open to more than just one problem to deal with. At least prove to yourself the head gasket is no good. It would scare me at the age alone on an alloy engine head, T
