1995 Camaro 3.4l having ideling problem Sign In

I have a 1995 Camaro that doesn't want to idle .I have tried numerous things.Added Sea foam fuel treatment. new plugs.coil packs fairly new just wasted 27 bucks on the idle control sensor which made the problem just ever so slightly better meaning it doesn't act up when running 55 as it did prior to replacing idle control sensor..now it just does it when stopping or turning in somewhere.I have had all the electrical test.such as Alternator,Battery, cranking amps. etc. everything checks good..no service engine light what so ever .Any help would be greatly appreciated .

Probably a dirty or faulty IAC. They can be cleaned with one on Hammer Time's old tooth brushes and carb cleanerWink

Is the check engine light coming on at all?

no not at all even.I made it come on intentionally to make sure check engine light worked and once I plugged up what I unplugged to make it come on it reset as it's supposed to do after a couple driving cycles

What do you mean by this? Do you mean the engine doesn't come down to idle speeds? Do you mean the engine stalls out when your foot isn't on the accelerator?

How does the engine run off idle and while cruising? Is the engine lacking power on acceleration?

it Idle's when you first start it.it will die if you don't keep foot on throttle .when running down the hwy. it runs fairly good tries to cutout ever so often.the very minute you go to stop or slow down to turn if you don't keep it running with throttle it dies.

This one is going to need some analyzing to gather what exactly is going on here. The IAC (idle air control) motor is what you probably replaced. There is no idle control sensor.

There could be more than one problem if the engine is cutting off while your cruising. Really need to hook on a scan tool and watch some data stream information. Need to monitor idle air control counts to see how the computer is commanding the IAC valve and check to see if the output side of the computer is indeed commanding the idle motor. There could be other things going on that could affect the IAC system, so those would have to be sorted out. An experienced drive-ability tech should be able to figure that out.

thanks .that seems to be the only way I'm going to figure it out .get it on a machine. The car isn't dying while cruising down the road it almost like it's coughing or even better hiccuping and it's not constant .
The second you give it a little more throttle it stops doing it until the next time.it only dries when sitting still or going slow to turn in somewhere like a parking space if you don't keep the idle around 1200 it dies with in a few seconds sometime instantly

well the problem is getting worse it is now hiccuping while cruising 45 mph.unless I unplug the IAC .it idle's at 2000 rpm with it unplugged but it don't die when stopping..on to the next phase of guessing.

The IAC is a stepper motor, so what ever position it was in before you unplugged it it will stay in the position once it is unplugged.

Guessing really isn't going to solve your problem efficiently and cheaply as possible than having it diagnosed using specific testing methods based on data received. There isn't enough data collected to be able to make a guess. You can't diagnose something based off the symptoms alone and be confident in your diagnosis.

Re: 1995 Camaro 3.4l having ideling problem Sign In

can't afford to put on a machine so it's a process of elimination.or live with it. If I knew how to reset the computer the new Iac could very well fix the problem.I've got the negative battery cable unhooked over night in an attempt to reset the computer..The ECM will start to learn the new idle cells and Desired RPM should start to decrease. 4. Ignition OFF for 60 s. 5. Start and idle the engine in PARK for 3 min. 6. After the 3 min run time the engine should be idling normal. If the engine idle speed has not been learned the vehicle will need to be driven at speeds above 70 km/h (44 mph) with several decelerations and extended idles. 7. After the drive cycle, the engine should be idling normally. NOTE: Do NOT perform this procedure if DTCs are set. Refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle . NOTE: During the drive cycle the check engine light may come on with idle speed DTCs. If idle speed codes are set, clear codes so the ECM can continue to learn. .If the engine idle speed has not been learned, turn OFF the ignition for 60 s and repeat step 6. 8. Once the engine speed has returned to normal, clear DTCs and return to the diagnostic that referred you.

You might be spending more money on guessing than paying a shop to diagnose it.

You could start by checking for vacuum leaks, stuck open or leaking EGR valve, or ignition timing problems.

already checked for vacuum leaks.but do need to check the egr valve.

The Egr valve is working as it's supposed to after removing and cleaning very good and replacing a non existent gasket..the car Runs better but still dies upon on coming to a complete stop.

Exactly how did you determine what the valve is or isn't doing when the engine is running?
