I have a '95 Mazda Protege with about 130,000 miles. Just recently my car has started this. When I come to a stop, the car engine revs itself every few seconds, from between about 1500-3000 RPM. It seems like it only does it until the car is warmed up, then it stops. Since now I am keeping a close eye on my theremostat, I have also noticed that then after driving for awhile the thermostat will fluctuate from mid-range all the way up to as hot as it goes. It has never done this before, and it's not really that cold yet compared to what it will be like eventually so I am worried. I am pretty ignorant when it comes to cars so any advice anyone can give me, especially in simple terms, would be really appreciated.

When you are stopped and the temp. guage climbs, do you hear the cooling fan for the radiator turn on? Steve

No I haven't heard it... but I haven't really listened for it so I may have to try turning down the radio and trying to hear it. And it's not only when I'm stopped that the temp. climbs, but just as I'm driving I'll notice that it will creep slowly towards Hot, then fluctuate back down.

I would start by pressure testing the cooling system for leaks. If it is leak free and the radiator is full, replace the thermostat. If the problem persists, get the head checked out. Steve
