1995
Saturn
SL2
1.9L MFI DOHC 4CYL
101,009

my engine will just die at times when I come to a stop or when slowing down to make a turn, when it happens I just put it in park and it starts right up.It does not do it all the time and have a couple days it does not do it at all.
the engine sometimes is a little sluggish at times also but once up to speed it runs good. service engine light came on once before but when I shut the car off it never came back on and has not came back on since. Was told it could be
a sensor any Ideas Thanks

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem. With a 1996 or newer and some 95 cars and you have an AutoZone or Advanced auto parts in your area, they will read them for free. Once you have these code numbers, we can be a lot more specific about what your problem may be.

You can also try cleaning the throttle body for the stalling.

Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle.

Just called auto zone and I guess the state of California does not allow them to test codes

Yes, in California they have to be licensed but from what I understand, they will loan or rent the code reader to you.

>>Yes, in California they have to be licensed but from what I understand<< Hmmmm. Sounds like a good idea. Would stop the parts stores from selling uneeded parts.Wink

It's a legal thing with California licensing emission techs. The AZ people are not licensed to give technical emissions advice so they can't do it in that state. I wish they couldn't do it in any state with all the bad advice they give just to sell parts.

Agree 100%. In CA, they have BAR (Bureau of Automotive Repair). All states should have that. Had my 'smog' license in CA way back in '75. We'd do the inspection, adjustment, and cert, ourselves. Only 'loophole', was that you could 'pass' the mother-in-law to keep on her good side. (like, she had a good side?) She was so fat....okay, ask "How fat was she?"....She was so fat that she had to stick her hands out to see if she was walking or rolling. But, that's another story.........
