100k miles. Car stalls when idle, must keep in nuetral and press gas at lights or stop signs. Doesn't stall when in park. Car also has a slight lurch when excelerating, lurch happens at around 15-20 mph not indicitive of transmission problem. Was suggested that its the air inflow sensor... Mechanic claims to have checked it out... Any suggestions? Thanks

You may have a bad IAC ( idle air control) but try cleaning the throttle body first. Remove the intake snorkel, have someone hold the throttle wide

open for you and scrub the back side of the throttle plate and surrounding bore with an old tooth brush and some carb cleaner. Be sure to spray some

into the small holes next to the throttle plate. That should help stabilize the idle. If it still has a problem, replace the IAC.

Your saying that the lurch is created by the carbon buildup that prevents that "butterfly valve" from opening smoothly?
That same buildup would be interfering with the Iac. Is there any way to make sure that its the IAC and not the air inflow sensor?
Can I assume that it only stalls on idle and not at any other speed would indicate the IAC?
(its my brothers car, I havnt been able to see it, he just tells me symptons and I'm supposed to figure it out)
Thanks for the help!!

No, I didn't say that at all.

The idle is controlled by metering very small amounts of air allowed into the system through the use the electric motor in the IAC. If the throttle plate gets a carbon buildup, it does not seal correctly in the throttle bore allowing air to leak at various points and making the steady volume of air harder to control.

You need to start a new question for that. We can't work on multiple cars in one thread. It's way too confusing.

Hi,

I have 200K on my 95 Nissan Maxima. I suggest you should try to clean the MAF sensor. If you have a Multimeter, you should be able to measure the resistance while the car is idle. It will allow you to narrow down to somewhat the MAF. I don't have the spec with me, however, if you look the spec for the MAF it should tell you. Since the MAF is a little expensive, I will not recommend you go out and buy it. Anyway, I had a problem with my 95 Maxima. I did not replace anything except go in through each of the sensor and check with my Multimeter. I bought a Cardone at Advance Auto Part. Eversince, I did not have any problem with mine. Before, once in a while the car just stall. Now, it is running perfect. If you have any question, please post here.

Sincerely,

Yugo

I realize I am responding to a post that is three years old but I had the same problem and solved my problem by replacing my Fuel Filter, I have a 1995 with a 5 speed with 231k.
Mine would also die at idle and I discovered that my model has a Fuel Pressure By-Pass Valve that's controlled by vacuum. What was happening is while driving the Fuel Pump couldn't keep the fuel pressure up do to the restricted Fuel Filter when I came to a stop the By-Pass valve would open the pressure would drop and the engine would die.

If you know it's 3 years old, why did you respond to it?
